HI,

My primary phone number that everyone has is with Cingular Wireless that I had since August 1998. I have had Vonage since January 2005, and I like the service (my wife does also). I was considering porting my Cingular number which I CAN do in October when my Cingular contract runs out. Before then would cancel my account, and then I would be hit with early cancellation.

(A little off track here). I called Cingular to ask if they can just give me a new number because I originally wanted to keep my Cingular phone, but they could not do this since porting cancels the account. Solution: Sign up again. Anyway I decided to go with Sprint so this becomes a moot point.

(Back on track). Is there any risk of my losing the number at some point in the future if I port to Vonage? What if Vonage goes out of business for some reason?

I am also concerned with only being able to transfer the number back from Vonage to the original source (like Cingular) if necessary (you never know). If I go with Sprint then I will technically have to get Cingular to transfer back then be stuck with a 2 year agreement with Cingular (just to save my number).

This is one reason why I am considering porting my Cingular number to Vonage. I may be moving out of my area to a different market in the next few years (depending on my job), and I understand that when you contact the wireless provider with a new address then you would need to change your phone number. Is this true? Someone please explain. If I transfer it to Vonage then it is safe since it will go with me no matter where I move, but then there is my concerns above.

I guess you can't be 100% secure no matter what you do.
