Well let's see. I went out and bought two wireless devices (planning on returning one and keeping the other)... Main goal was to purchase this to address QoS. The two devices I bought was the Belkin Pre-N and the WRT54GSv2. I'm on the fence about which one I am going to keep since sveasoft.com says that they will be putting out firmware that supports both. They key is when....??

I've loaded Free-Man/Basic 1.0.4 on the WRT54GSv2 but now am wondering if I should return that and keep the Belkin and wait for sveasoft to come out with firmware since it has superior wireless.

The builtin Belkin Pre-N QoS doesn't seem to do that well in providing priority for my RTP300. Free-Man/Basic 1.0.4 on the WRT54FSv2 has done the best so far but it's not perfect. I wonder if a later version of sveasoft will make it even better.

I don't believe that Sveasoft QoS functionality changed much between Talisman 1.0.4 and 1.0.5. It will change significantly with Talisman 1.1 though: link.

It has been about 3 months since Talisman 1.0.5 was released, so who knows when Talisman 1.1 will be available. I would expect the revamped QoS functionality to be a work in progress though and would stick with Alchemy 1.0 or Talisman 1.0.5 until the new implementation matures a bit.

I should also add that as of yesterday, I am trying the QoS functionality of my Xincom dual WAN router. It's a bit more cryptic than the Alchemy netfilter implementation that I have the most experience with, but it does make my network configuration much simpler. We'll see how it goes.

I'm running a WRT54GS (ver 1.0) router with Sveasoft's public release of Alchemy and have had 2 computers running BitTorrent and an FTP server going full-throttle and still didn't experience any probs with Voip.

It's configured to filter by MAC address rather than port (I found port priority to be near-useless).

This issue pops up so much that some enterprising person should buy a bunch of WRT54G's, put Sveasoft firmware on them, and sell them custom-configured for each individual. A customer could buy one, provide their configuration info, have it shipped to them, plug it in, and it just works...

I bet there are a number of non-techie VoIP/bittorrent/online gaming users that would be willing to pay for such a service.

Although I am not aware of a programmatic way to monitor the QoS functionality of my Xincom router (unlike Sveasoft), it appears to be working.

I started uploading a large file in the middle of a phone call today and my call quality was still pretty good. I also saw the throughput of my ftp increase quite a bit once I ended my call.

And with regard to reselling Sveasoft-enabled routers, that could be a valuable service to individuals and small businesses. It would be easy to set them up with things like QoS functionality, a basic PPTP VPN server, wireless repeaters to provide wide coverage for wlans, an encrypted WDS link between buildings, and more. As long as Satori or Alchemy was used, I would imagine that even Sveasoft couldn't object. Smile

A couple more to throw in there. These are FreeBSD-based solutions, so they provide more flexibility with regard to hardware. You can also configure them more ways than you can imagine:

m0n0wall
pfSense (still a work in progress, but looks very promising)
