Hi, my boss just got Vonage service hooked up in our office, and I have a question concerning getting your voice messages sent to your e-mail address. Are they still sent in .WAV files? My boss is concerned that this uses up a lot of memory and bandwidth (or some darn thing that's bad to use up, please excuse my tech ignorance). I read some older posts to this forum about this issue, but noticed that they were from 2003. Can anyone tell me if this is still the case today, and if not, what kind of files are used now?
Thank you very much for your help. |

Yes, they are WAV files. See this link at Vonage:

Your boss should be aware that receiving these files via email is totally optional. You can also log onto the web page to hear your voicemail or you can listen over the phone. This is configurable at the Vonage web site after logging into your account. |

Thanks for the info. I already know how to get the voice mails the regular way, but my boss, the technophile, loved the idea of having the messages e-mailed to us, and asked me to explore this option as well. But when he heard about the .WAV files, he was less than thrilled, so he wanted me to check with you helpful folks! |

Well, I don't know what he considers large. But I just received a 59 second voice mail that is 873KB in size. Given the speed to today's networks and the size of today's disks, that's not particularly large unless he intends to archive them.
Seriously though, while WAV files may not be the most efficient format, most people just listen to their vmail and then delete it. So size isn't much of a big deal. |

I would have to agree with turbo53.
While I really do not want to start a file format debate, nor am I looking for a Window vs Mac fight, the WAV format is universally except as the "standard" (with mp3 being of higher quality) sound file. |

Is .mp3 actually higher quality than .wav? It's certainly a lot smaller, but I've never thought of it as higher quality. |

One great thing I have found in business is having the vm sent as an attachment. There have been a few times coworkers and clients have left a message saying one thing, then deny it. It's kind of hard to deny once you play back the message for them. I think of it as a nice extra CYA. |

MP3 is more like a compressed WAV file. So a WAV file would in theory have better quality |
