That's a good point.

I'd love to be notified somehow, or have a place to look to find out what firmware verson my WRTP54G should have (what Vonage is currently recommending/providing). Knowing that my router is about to be upgraded or has been upgraded recently would give me some idea not to waste my time diagnosing new problems.

But I can't find the WRTP54G anywhere but these forums. Maybe I'm not searching in the righe places. I haven't visited the forum or even anything but my account page at Vonage, because everything has been working so well there's been no need until just recently.

If Vonage could tell me about available upgrades and allow me to decide when to do it myself, that would be even better. I could do it on a Friday and diagnose the upgrade over the weekend when I'm not trying to connect to work. I'd also have a good idea of where any problems I'm experiencing came from.

Not listed that I can see (I see the WRT54G but that's a different router).

I stated earlier "passing the buck" because I received an e-mail from *Linksys* tech support to upgrade the firmware in the *Linksys* router. The e-mail link took me to a *Linksys* URL for the *Linksys* knowledgebase FAQ on where/how to download and install the upgrade. Then the e-mail gave me a *Linksys* 800 # to call for questions on this firmware installation. But when I went to the *Linksys* chat support, the guy gave me some info but then said it was Vonage's problem and that he couldn't give me a link, phone #, or referral to go to next.

Linksys, linksys, linksys, linksys....ummmm.....it's vonage's problem. So that's why: "passing the buck." The e-mail should have come from Vonage if they are in charge of the firmware upgrade.

I'm confused. Did you contact Linksys for assistance (logical step, I know) and they replied with their "latest" version? If so, well, it is true that Linksys should have just said "call Vonage" and hung up (grin) but they did try to get you firmware.

If you got the email out of the blue, I'd be a little suspicious of the email. If you had previously asked them to notify you of updates, well, they did. But because your router is technically a Vonage unit (despite the pretty clear "Linksys" logo on it), obviously you know now to contact Vonage first.

Given that Vonage doesn't even list support for the darned thing yet, despite the fact that I've had mine since July, I think it's pretty logical to contact Linksys first. Wrong, apparently, but perfectly logical. Smile

ok, uh, that list is for routers. not for Vonage devices. routers that a person has that he may want to use for Vonage. that's why when you select one it has an image saying if it's certified to work with Vonage or not, and how to get it to work and/or troubleshoot it. c'mon technology pro. another clue is how absolutely no Vonage device whatsoever is in that list. no wrtp54g, wrt54gp2, rt31p2, rtp300, mta100x.

so you got an email out of the blue? you've never stated why you got an email in the first place. since linksys does have a revision of firmware for the device (the gpl code), they probably just tried to make you go away by sending that to you when you went to them for support with your Vonage device. a common and understandable misconception is that the device manufacturer is responsible for the device. they aren't, Vonage is. stranger things have happened I suppose.

OK, that's fair, and I do see that now. The WRTP54G is a router in addition to being a Vonage device, so I assumed, stupidly, that the very basic installation instructions would be in the adapter section and they would be putting router config information in the router section.

However, looking at it, they only give the very basic installation and simple troubleshooting information on all of the phone adapter pages. Never mind. My stupid.

No, I only contacted Linksys because *they* sent me an e-mail out of the blue. I initiated none of this. I was contacting them because it was a Linksys link to version 1.00.37 of the firmware and I already had 1.00.52 (I was asking why?? Was I supposed to DOWNgrade??).

Hmm. I never got that one, but I don't think I ever registered my router with Linksys. I agree, that was a pretty dumb thing for Linksys to send. Lucky you knew your firmware release number. Wink

EDIT: Even odder, that article was updated three days ago. So Linksys is still apparently maintaining that section of their site, with a Vonage logo on it too. I can easily see how that would mislead!

After losing connection again, I called Vonage asking for an update on when this would be fixed. Took me a little while to get through, but the gentleman I talked to was very nice, and admitted that there had been some problems in the .52 release, which was loaded about two weeks ago to all of the WRTP54G units.

When I explained my problems, he pushed a couple of buttons and told me that he was loading 1.00.55 which should hopefully help out. Lo and behold, 5 minutes later, my router restarted.

My Vonage line provisioned as fast as it once did (on .52, it was taking up to 5 minutes to provision). Time will tell on reliability, but the router seems to have its old snappy speed back.
