Time Warner/Brighthouse been talking for years and years about letting people buy their own modems. So far nothing but talk. I think renting for $3-5 a month is great. It breaks it is their problem.

If your breaks I am sure the cable company will be happy to come out and give you a modem. The problem is you will be out $50+

On the other hand if you have an APC type backup unit you will less likely ruin the modem and save $$ in the long run.

I would buy my own (I did actually). You can get new cable modems for around $60, so if you rent them at $5/month, you bought yourself a new one every 12 months.

Exactly.

That's the logic I used when i bought mine.

WEll, actually. My cable company which I switched to about 7 months ago gives us a modem. No renting/buying required.

However, one thing to remember when making your decision is how long it will take for them to get you a new modem. My cable company's
base is over 3 hours away from me. So they only come to my area on certian days. It took my almost 2 weeks to get my service hooked up because of this issue. If my modem goes out, who knows how long it would take them to come out with a new one.

Oh, I can tell you how long it would take, if I was the customer.

TOMORROW TOMORROW TOMORROW TOMORROW TOMORROW
TOMORROW TOMORROW TOMORROW TOMORROW TOMORROW

Or your office will regret the lack of service every day that I have to wait. And issue me credits.

True but you are assumeing you will have $60 when lighting or a surge hits. That would be nice but in the real world things breaks when we are scrape for cash. It would take Brighthouse a couple days to send someone out.
