On loan to us from our good friends at Resources for Michigan Telephone Users is one of the most detailed VoIP wiring guides available on the Internet. So detailed, I had to break it down into two pages:
Vonage Home Wiring and Installation Guide Page One:
Basic wiring primer
Warning the phone company
New advice for a new kind of Network Interface Unit
What if it's a new house, or there's no Network Interface Unit?
Plugging Vonage in
An alarming exception
Vonage Home Wiring and Installation Page Two:
What about TiVo, ReplayTV, Dish Network, DirecTV, etc.?
Sending Faxes successfully
Avoid too many ringers
One jack, two cords — no problem!
The "dead jack" problem
Eliminating radio interference
Using VoIP as line 2
A DSL alternative
What to do in an apartment or condo
Special considerations for business customers
Getting listed in the telephone directory (or with Directory Assistance)
In addition to this wonderful resource, Vonage Forum Member TaZMaNiaK has written an excellent post in our Fax - Tivo - Alarms Forums entitled How to properly wire an alarm for use with Vonage which you may find useful if you are considering wiring an alarm to your Vonage line. |

I just spoke with 3 different Vonage support represntatives. The final response (from the "advanced" support rep) was that Vonage does not support, nor recommend the use of, multiline phone systems (such as most business would have). This seems in contrast to a section from the above posted technical support reference which states: "Because Vonage offers a business class service, there are going to be companies that want to hook their Vonage service into a business phone system or a PBX. There are two common problems, and both have workarounds." The technical support reps indicated they did not understand where we got our information that Vonage would recommend or support the use of such multiline systems. we would like to use Vonage as our provider, but have not been able to connect our existing multiline phone system for Vonage service. |

There is no reason that you cannot connect multiple Vonage lines into a business system/PBX. You need to handle each line as separate line. |

Most PBX's require the use of ground start trunks. Linksys phone adapters utilize loop start. These are not compatable with each other. There is an adapter you can buy, but that may be expensive. Otherwise, each line from vonage phone adapter should be able to be "plugged" into the trunk port of a PBX or business phone system.
If you wish to utilize features from Vonage (call forward or call waiting), make sure the phone system can send a hookflash to the trunk.
Good luck, |
