Hey folks! I have been a Vonage customer since January and have had NOTHING but great service. Yesterday I received an email which I will partially quote here:
| Quote: | We have successfully ported your existing phone number to your Vonage account. You will most likely need to reboot your "Digital Phone Adapter" in order to activate this number on your device. Simply unplug the power cable for 20 seconds and plug it back in again. Please wait about 5 minutes for the device to register. You should then hear a dial tone and be able to make calls. You will still be able to make outgoing calls using your current home phone jacks with your original phone number, as well as with our device until midnight tonight when the change will be completed in full. At that time your original phone number will be completely available only through Vonage. You do not need to contact your previous provider to disconnect the line. This is taken care of during the transfer of your number to Vonage. Please be advised that you will receive a final bill from your previous provider. During the transfer of your number to Vonage you may experience down time. Typically the loss of your service will last between one to two hours. Your Voicemail Box was reset following the Number Transfer Process. You may access your Voicemail Box by calling your local access number in your area. If you do not know your local access number you can find one on the Vonage website: http://www.vonage.com/features_vm_access.php Keep in mind that the Voicemail system will identify your Vonage Phone Number ONLY when calling from that number. Alternatively, you may access your Voicemail from another line, however you will be required to enter your Vonage phone Number (1+ 10 digit phone number). In addition, your Voicemail PIN has been reset to "1234". You will be required to select a PIN the very first time you access the Voicemail System. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT YOU WILL NEED TO REACTIVATE YOUR 911 DIALING CAPABILITY FOR THE NUMBER YOU TRANSFERRED TO Vonage.
| Now, thing is, my number actually ported last February. Had I been waiting until now, I'd have been SCREAMING. Do I actually have to reactivate my 911 service? My voicemail seems to be working just fine. When I asked Vonage about the 911 service, they responded with:
| Quote: | You need to activate 911 on this number, and reset your voicemail box if you have not done so . If your voicemail box is working successful after your number transfer is completed, you don't need to reset your voicemail and you verify 911 is activated on this number , Please disregard the previous mail. | In their 911 FAQ page, they tell you not to test 911 service as it could be punishable by law. So I'm caught in a catch 22. 911 service was activated months ago on my line. I cannot test it now to make sure they didn't screw it up. How do I handle this?? Thanks and best regards, Bill |

Hey Bill. 2 Things: 1, if you can determine what the direct phone number is for your local police station, you can call and ask them about testing. I did that and gave the agent all of my information. Then I dialed 911 and reached the same person. She did say that my personal information did not come up when I called 911 but did when I dialed directly. 2, Dial 933 to see the status of your 911 dialing. You can call that number regularly to see if e911 service is available.
Good luck, Vince |
