PostPosted: Mon Feb 09, 2004 4:53 pm    Post subject: Out Going Caller ID for Small Business Reply with quote Back to top

I have the Vonage Service and run a small business. I feel it is neccasary for my outgoing caller ID to show the name of my business, rather than saying Vonage Holding. I didn't feel this was a hard task to get accomplished.

Vonage put up a fight over it. They first tried to tell me that they couldn't do it. I told them they could by the fact that they could display Vonage Holding. We went back and forth and finally I told them, that I do not disrespect the name of their bsuiness and that I understand the value of their name and I wanted the same for my business. I said I did not wish for the name of my business to be mis-represented. I finally got them to change the name to "unknown" and show my number.

Has anyone else had this problem?

This is a problem for Vonage. Several firms in the telecom ether collect "Calling Name" information for telephone users. This "Calling Name" information is provided to them by the underlying carrier that is using the number.

Vonage IS NOT the underlying carrier (in fact they're not a carrier at all). Your telephone # is provided by 1 of 2 CLEC's (PaeTec and/or Focal Communication), thus it's up to them to supply the Calling Name information.

For Vonage to make this work, they'd have to provide the information to the CLEC and then in turn, have them communicate this information to the CNAME database firms.

This is not something you want to do manually, so I might guess that Vonage simply hasn't gotton around yet to figuring out how to automatically provision it.

This also holds true for listings with directory assistance.

Well I can appreciate that it is a little difficult to do, but there needs to be some way of making it happen. I want the name for my buisness displayed. They sure were able to get it changed to "unknown" in a hurry which tells me they could change it to something else just as easy.

Is Vonage really considering allowing us to set the outgoing name display?
