could someone please tell me the difference between RT31P2 and RTP300? I have a RT31P2 and for a while it gave me a lot of trouble, so Vonage sent me a RTP300. Then all of sudden my RT31P2 start to work like a charm so I returned the RTP300. Should I have kept it? I am sure they'll mail it to me again if I call.

VonageTPA, agree. I liked the blue LEDs when I first saw them but then they were too bright and somewhat obnoxious. Saw them later at night in full darkness across from my baby's room and it was too much and I hated them. I might eventually do something creative to reduce their glare... creative typically means tape!

I now have on the same desk an assortment of green LEDs on the cable modem, light amber on the wireless, obnoxious bright blue on the RTP300, and amber on my Uniden cordless. Makes for an interseting laser show late at night!

dnh: My very first post in this thread mentions some of the minor, intermittent issues (annoyances) I had with my RT31P2. In addition, when I signed up with Vonage, I should have received a RTP300 but they were on temporary hold, so that was another fair reason to ask for a replacement.

Statistically, my RT31P2 worked much, much more than it was broken. I use it as my primary line (no more POTS) and my cell as backup, and wanted to eliminate those minor issues where I would have to unexpectedly reboot my network.

In my (short) experience and from reading the specs, the RTP300 is much better hardware and eventually will have very stable firmware. Many on this board agree.

I appreciate your candor, I got my RT31P2 under similar conditions as did you. So far, I have nothing to complain about. I would not be able to tell this thing apart from a copper line. Yet, I see many complaints and problems that some people are having with their RTP300's posted in this forum. It appears that few problems surround the RT31P2 by comparison. I have been considering asking Vonage to replace the RT31P2 but on second thought, and as said above, "If it ain't broke...". I think I'll stick it out with the old gal. Thanks for your insight. Lol

I think if you go back through the older messages in the forum, you'll find that the RT31P2 really had issues when it first came out. I'll agree that now it seems to have stable firmware and fewer issues.

At the same time, the reason you see more posts about the RTP300 is because its firmware isn't all that well-developed and it happens to be the current product Vonage is shipping. I think it's safe to say that 80% of the posts and problems with Vonage are experienced by new users who aren't entirely knowledgable about computer networking nor Voip. The messages of people complaining that BitTorrent interrupts their Vonage calls are a perfect example of this. Because of these two reasons, the RTP300 will see more posts. The firmware is truly its fault, but the newbies aren't.

Also, the RTP300 has stronger hardware... you can issue all of the firmware updates you want to an RT31P2, but the hardware inside will always be junk. Even in a rather well-insulated recording studio, both RT31P2 routers I was given had line noise that was well above what I normally get with a POTS line. My RTP300 is very close to dead-silent. Additionally, I have dragged the RTP300 to a location within 1000' of a 50,000 watt FM transmitter with no ill effects, no interference, no line noise. At some point, I'll drag it out to a transmitter site which has a 316kW transmitter, should be a good torture test. Video cameras don't even work well at that location because of the high RF fields.
