I can't believe they can charge you w/o you knowing it's going to be achargeable call..
herre In Ontario, if the call will cost you you have to dial 11 digits, if it's free it'll be 7 or 10 digits.. if you dial w/o a 1 you will never get charged anything.. and our payphones are still only 25c too and no time limit.. |

Unfortunately the traditional telcos down here are good at finding ways to charge you any way they can. My phone bill was almost as twisted as my tax forms. |

That's the way it used to be here, too <sigh>. |

Thanks for the help. I will check into the 800 #. I actually got my old line hooked up again because I thought I was going to switch back. I think I will see what sort of long distance package they can offer me and compare it to what I am paying Vonage + what the 800 # would cost. |

Going back a bit, Mundy5 mentioned that he transferred his number to make sure that he got a number that was local. Is that not an option for you? |

That sounds like a good plan. It would be interesting to hear if the POTS phone company offered you a free month for trial.
In my case I wouldn't go back to Verizon for a free year of service. I wouldn't even have looked into Voip if it hadn't been for their "customer service" for both wired and wireless. I guess that "Can you hear me now?" applies to where they want to be heard and not to where I live. I heard the joke once that we can send a man to the moon and a transmit signals back and forth to Mars, but Verizon can't keep a good cell signal between my living room and my kitchen. Heck, they can't even keep a good signal between my front yard and my back yard. And then they argued with me when I complained. So, I paid a $300 disconnect penalty just to get rid of them, contrary to other cell companies when I moved who just disconnected me for free.
Sorry, you gave me a chance to rant about those guys again. Back to the subject. I think you have a good plan. Find what works best for you and then as the technology matures you may or may not find yourself with Voip along the way. I think we'll see you stay with Voip, but you will be the best judge. |
