I tried the Alchemy and found things buggy so I thought I would see if the WRT54G with the latest firmware will have descent settings so that I can run my Bitttorrent without phone problems. The router Vonage they gave me didn't work out by itself. so now I have the 2 routers set up and I would like to give Vonage full priority when on the phone. I don't care if the torrent slows down, as long as it picks up when I hang up.. Most of the settings on the router are chinese to me, so any help will be most appreciated. I have the vonage router plugged into port 1 of the WRT54G. I don't use the wireless..
If I just enable QOS and give port 1 high priority is that enough ?
Are there other setting to help me out..
Or do you think the linksys firmware won't do what I want. I did read that Alchemy is suppose to do what I want, but I was having problems.... |

Hyper WRT is one that also comes recommended for QOS also..

QoS by port doesn't seem to work well, regardless of the firmware used. Best bet is to do QoS by MAC address (best), IP (second best), or port (third best) |

Okay, I don't have any Linksys WRT54G(S) routers that aren't running Alchemy, so your menus may be different, but with Alchemy (and assuming Talisman), here's the steps:
1) log onto your WRT54G(S) router
2) click on Applications and Games
3) click on QoS in the submenu
4) Under MAC priority, type in the MAC address from your Vonage adapter (the WAN mac address printed on the underside of the router will work providing you've not done anything with MAC Cloning on the Vonage adapter)
5) Click Add
6) Select Premium (or whatever the highest setting is) next to the MAC address you just typed in
7) click Save Changes... and the WRT54G will reboot and you'll be up & running |

My configuration is Modem --> Hawking Broadband Booster ---> WRT54GS.
Into the WRT54GS I have 3 items:
Port 1 --- RTP 300 with 2 lines
Port 2 --- RTP 300 with 1 line
Port 3 --- LAN Switch with a whole bunch of computers and gaming devices
Using the DHCP table on the router I can identify the MAC address for items on the LAN, however...
HOw can I identify the MAC address of the two Vonage RTP 300 devices?
I want to set QOS by MAC and not by port. |

thanks for your help.... I did the mac address... it's possible that the new router does a better job than the vonage router even if I didn't set up the QOS... so far so good.. I heard a little buzzing during a call and just a touch of echo... |

I recently (yesterday in fact) invested in a WRT54GS v2 router, put Free-Man/Basic 1.0.4 and it made all the difference for me for throttling uploads when the phone is in use. Even the latest firmware with the WRT54GS router doesn't/didn't have sufficent QoS for me. You'd think Linksys or whomever writes the firmware would pay attention to groups like sveasoft and get a clue.
Oh and you have to becareful... You might think you have sufficent QoS but if you're doing a major upload, the sound quality can still sound fine to you but the person on the other end will hear chopped and mangled audio. The way I was able to test all of this without annoying people with test calls was by calling my office and leaving myself voicemails. It seemed kind of silly but made for a good test. |
