I just spent over 2 hours on the phone repeating myself and trying to decipher what was being said because of the heavy accent. What fun. I'm hoping to have better luck here. Confused
I have a Netgear FR114P configured as my primary router and DHCP server. To it, I have the broadband modem, a computer, and a wireless access point connected. These are in the basement. Upstairs, I have a computer which is using the Linksys RT31P2 which was provided by Vonage. I had initially installed it by disabling DHCP and enabling the RIP1 protocol and setting a static route to my primary router. The Netgear had an IP of 192.168.1.1 and the Linksys was given 192.168.1.2. To the Linksys I have the desktop PC plugged into an ethernet port, along with my TiVo box. A phone is connected to the phone port. Given all that, the network was working fine. The 3 computers and the TiVo could all communicate. The phone would get a dial tone, but I couldn't make or receive calls. Even though I had a dial tone, the registration server couldn't be contacted (seen via the 'status' page) and the phone light on the front of the RT31P2 wasn't lit.
After talking to tech support at Vonage, I was told that I need to connect the Netgear directly to the WAN/Internet port on the Linksys. This did solve my phone problem, but now the network is not working unless I enable the DHCP service on the Linksys. Obviously I can't have 2 DHCP servers with my configuration.
I've tried disabling NAT and enabling dynamic routing on the 'Advanced Routing' tab, with no luck. Currently I'm using all the defaults on the Linksys, including the default IP of 192.168.15.1. If I make any changes this computer can no longer contact the network, but I don't want to have two DHCP services running. I had assumed, incorrectly I guess, that if I merely disable DHCP on the Linksys that it should function as a pass-through router.
I called Linksys as well, and after 1/2 hour on the phone, I was told that they no longer support their dynamic routing feature. What? I don't understand that one. It's part of the product and they decided they will ignore that feature exists? Strange.
Anyway. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this problem. I'm probably making this harder than it needs to be.
What am I missing?
