Aside from cost - what about functionality and add-ons? Like Voicemail, call waiting, call forwarding, virtual numbers, 911, caller ID, Dashboard-like ease of use, etc.?

I'm curious how Packet 8 stands up to Vonage on those features given that the quality and running cost are almost the same (+/- $5 and occassional echo)

First I never have any echo with Vonage.

Packet8 has Caller ID, Voicemail, Call forwarding and online account management (although I have heard it is not as extensive as Vonage). They do not have virtual numbers or any type of 911 service, you can't send or receive faxes, and they also do not have a second port (as has recently been activated as an option with Vonage). Also, based on the information on their web site I would assume that they have no Call Waiting. I searched their site looking for anything about it and found nothing in their feature list or their FAQ.

They do have more area codes than Vonage, they have video capability (if you want to spend $600 for a video phone for each end of the call, plus P8 service for each end), they also have a 30 day trial period instead of 14 days.

On any plan but their unlimited plan they charge you for incoming minutes, which was unacceptable to me. Also, in order to get a "better price" than Vonage you are required to sign a year agreement. I have never seen them say how many customers they have. Vonage has around 21,000, and I would have to assume that P8 has much less.

The requirement to sign a one year contract is enough to keep me away from Packet-8. I am out of my contracts with the cell phones and go month to month with the option to cancel at anytime. That is the American Way! Smile
