Hi! I am debating to use the WRT54G or the RPT300 that Vonage provides for free. I am setting up a Vonage line for my mother that is not computer savy and looking for a no hassle device. The wireless might be convenient for them as they are probably going to get a laptop.
I have read that in the past there were problems with the WRT54G and have also read that there have been some firmware updates. In essence, has that fixed it and is it now as stable as the RPT300 for installation and everyday use by a non-techy?
I assume you mean the WRTP54G, not the WRT54G. The former is a 4-port Wireless B/G router/Vonage Voip adapter in one. The latter is a rock-solid 4-port Wireless B/G router with lots of alternate 3rd party firmware available, but it is not a Voip adapter.
As the owner of a WRTP54G, I strongly advise you to stay the hell away from it. Yes, some issues have been improved or fixed, but there are still plenty of others (such as echo and QoS) that remain problems. I can't say anything about RPT300.
I had some problems for the first couple of days, but a firmware upgrade (to v39 at the time) fixed all of my issues. I have had no problem at all since and can recommend the router. I realize that foums tend to emphasize the negative and those with postiive experience are usually under represented. Put me in the column of those who have had no problems with using this router.
