I recently started Comcast Cable internet service and Vonage in my home. The person who installed my service suggested going wireless (we're new to this - we've been using dial-up for years) with the advice that "all wireless routers are the same, so go for the cheapest one." So, I purchased an SMC wireless router, got the Voip router from Vonage in the mail, have a Belkin wireless card and the modem (supplied by Comcast) is by Motorola. Thus - 4 different pieces of hardware from 4 different companies...

My wireless service has been very patchy and inconsistent at best and my Vonage service has been about the same (dropped calls, the person on the other line cannot hear me for seconds at a time - randomly, the computer will detect a "strong" signal but my browser will not load any webpages, etc.).

I am wondering if anyone has had similar problems? Any suggestions? I have seen products that have the modem and 2 routers available in a single unit - would this help?

Any and all help/suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

do your wireless problems occur only while on the phone?
how is your network setup? switch it to modem, Vonage, wireless if it's not.

The wireless problems occur oftentimes on their own. Sometimes if the wireless internet is not working, then the phone is not working also. There are times, however, when both are not working at the same time (i.e., no dial tone and webpages will not load). The weird thing is that the computer will often recognize a "strong signal" during these times.

I believe my network is set up now as modem-to-wireless-to-vonage. I thought this was the only way I could set it up? If not, could you give me details on how to set it up as modem-to-vonage-to-wireless (if I'm understanding you correctly)?

modem to wan port of Vonage, lan port of Vonage to wan port of wless. power everything down and bring them up one by one starting with the modem.
are you using a cordless phone?

Indeed I am using a cordless phone. Would that be an additional complicating factor?

If you have a 2.4GHz cordless, then it would cause interference with your wireless since they both operate at 2.4GHz.

Check out a 5.8GHz cordless (the Uniden are very well liked on this forum; I own one with 3 handsets and love it).

There might be other problems with your wireless (that might not be related to your Vonage)... check your channel (set it to 6; 1, or 11; 6 is best) if there are other wireless routers nearby. If your Vonage is set up after your wireless, and your wireless router goes down, then so will your Vonage. Put your Vonage between your modem and wireless router.
