I'd go with 2 routers for redundancy.

The disadvantage to this plan is the increased complication in your local network.

So tell us more; this is interesting. How do you connect, for example, two RTP300s to a cable modem?

Thanks Jim for your advice. I just have another question. How did you configure the ISP address and DHCP on each of the devices? Do they have the same ISP? Did you disable the DHCP in either of the devices? Did you do some kind of port forwarding? I think most of my problem has to do with the fact that I am probably not configuring the modem and router properly so that they can communicate with each other.

Here is my setup:

I have my cable modem connected to the WAN port on my WRT54GP2 and my PC connected to one of the LAN ports on the WRT54GP2. When I first connected everything I unplugged both the cable modem and the WRT54GP2. I then plugged in the cable modem and waited for a minute or so. After that I plugged in the WRT54GP2 and waited for the lights to stop blinking continuously. When the blinking slowed to what appeared to be a normal pace I fired up my PC and everything was working.

I hope this helps.

My modem is supplied by Brighthouse so I did not have to configure anything (and I cannot even if I wanted to). The router is set to use DHCP to receive an IP address from the modem. The router is also configured to give out IP addresses using DHCP. My PC is configured to use DHCP to receive an IP address. I did not have to configure port forwarding or anything like that.
