So close... My phone number was finally transfered from Verizon, so...

1) I confirmed it by calling my home number from a cell phone, and only the Vonage-connected phone rang.

2) I went to my outside phone box, disconnected both plugs, and inserted a water-resistant note reading "DO NOT CONNECT" intended for any Verizon lackeys.

3) On the RTP300, I connected a cord from the "Phone 1" jack to a convenient wall jack.

4) Again on the RTP300, I connected a cord from the "Phone 2" jack to a nearby telephone.

The upshot? All of the phones in the house seem to work. Except for the "nearby telephone" connected to "Phone 2." When I pick up the phone, I get the "Your phone may be connected to the incorrect phone port" message.

If I substitute another phone for the one currently on "Phone 2," it makes no difference.

If I switch the cords for "Phone 1" and "Phone 2," I get the opposite effect; the nearby phone works fine, and all the other phones in the house deliver the "incorrect phone port" recording. Needless to say, I did not leave it in this configuration; the house is now connected on "Phone 1."

Looking at the front of the RTP300, I notice that the "Phone 1" light is on, while the "Phone 2" light is off. In other words, it seems that nothing I plug into the "Phone 2" jack is connecting properly.

Any suggestions on getting the last phone working? Many, many thanks.

Update: I've already tried cutting the power to the RTP300 for thirty seconds, and reconnecting; no effect on the problem.

Do you have two lines with Vonage? If not jack two is not active.

Ahh.... That makes sense. I thought I could simply use the second jack as an additional port on my existing line. I don't suppose it can be configured as such? I hate to use a splitter if I don't have to.

It's working the way it's supposed to. Phone 2 is not for a second telephone on the same line, it's for a second line if you pay Vonage for that. A fax line for example. Right now it's inactive, and the message you're getting tells you that.

Since you've plugged your Vonage adapter into the wall jack, you have to find another nearby wall jack to plug in that last phone. Either that or get a "Y" adapter so that both the phone and the adapter can plug in to the same wall jack.

If you don't like the looks of a splitter at the ata you can put it on the nearest wall jack. You could also buy a dual rj11 wall jack and run a jumper between the red and green pairs (red to red and green to green). You would then have a finished look and get the extra jack that you need.

Success... I found a splitter in the deepest strata of my desk drawers, and all of the phones now work. Many, many thanks for the fast response!

Add one more feature to the wish list -- label the routers with "LINE 1 & LINE 2" rather than Phone 1 & Phone 2.
