I am trying to install my Vonage at my dorm in France so i can keep in touch with people back home, but I cannot get it to work and I think the problem is firewall related:

1) My connection is high speed ethernet provided by the university to all dorm rooms (a username and password is required for me to access the network)

2) I have a PAP2 Phone Adapter

3) My router is D-Link DI-514

4) When I tried to run the testyourvoip I received this message: Your computer couldn't call our location on the standard SIP port (5060) or a commonly available port (6000). This suggests that a firewall is blocking all UDP access including SIP.

First, I have read the information indicating that I have to enable Port Forwarding on my router. That's great, but I do not know how to do that. So if someone could explain how that is done, I would appreciate it.

Secondly, I am concerned that their may be additional issues due to the univeristy network.

I would appreciate your help, since it is very expensive for me to call Vonage Customer Service from France (since the Vonage is not working currently)

No two firewalls will be configured using the same steps. Your device probably has a web configuration page. See the D-link site and you can probably find out how to get to that page.

The ports you discuss here are outbound ports according to Vonage. It might be easier to allow all outbound traffic from the device.

What Vonage calls port forwarding is really inbound traffic. Their documentation is truly awful in this reguard. There is a second help document out there gives the direction of the traffic. And they claim to only need ports 10000 through 20000 udp inbound. That does not seem to be true from and analysis of falied traffic on my firewall. I was forced to allow (and route inbound) nearly all high port udp traffic.

This could be a significant issue for a simple firewalling device and is a challenge to even the better firewalls.

this article is the better one of the two that they publish - but even their engineers disagree about what traffic is required, and I had to add more rules than they describe here.

My guess is that this is the more likely source of the problem. Temporarily disconnect your router, connect your PC directly to the university network connection, and run the test again. If you still have the same problem, then the university is firewalling the ports, likely because they've decided they don't want to support students using Voip on the net. If this is the case, you're probably out of luck.
