PostPosted: Tue Sep 06, 2005 3:49 pm    Post subject: Top RTP300 Issues/Concerns Reply with quote Back to top

These are the top RTP300 Issues that I hope Vonage/Linksys/Texas Instruments will fix soon. Once they do I will feel comfortable recommending Vonage to all my friends, family etc and I'll be able to call off the marriage counselor without switching back to SBC.

1. Reverse echo issue - Users on the other end of the RTP300 hear their own voice echoing in short staccato like bursts.

2. Upload QoS issue - Uploading files while on the phone seems to break up the phone conversation and people on the other end hear chopiness or can't hear your voice at all.

3. Shortened incoming ring issue - The ring is shorter than a normal POTS line. This affects users who still use answering machines/Toll saver option etc...

4. Inside to outside DMZ routing issue - This one is a little hard to explain. The RTP300 routes traffic from the inside interface back to the inside interface. For example, if you are running a web server, www.blahblah.com and you try accessing it from an inside machine behind the RTP300 the only way for you to hit it from the inside is to setup a port forward on the RTP300. Otherwise if you don't, when you hit www.blahblah.com it takes you to the front door of the RTP300 login page. You shouldn't need to do this, it should automatically route to the outside interface and then follow the DMZ path.

From what I can gather #2 and #4 can be addressed if I purchase a WRTGS and load Sveasoft but I'm not thrilled with that idea (since my only need for that would be Vonage).

These are my top 3. So far we've seen a few revisions of the RTP300 firmware:

v1.00.20
v1.00.29
v1.00.37
v1.00.43
v1.00.45

Did I miss anyting?

Great idea, this post should be a sticky...

A couple of things come to mind:

  1. My RTP300 shipped with firmware version 1.00.20, which isn't on your list.
  2. I haven't tried this recently, but I did have a VPN/DMZ Issue when using the RTP300 in a 2 router configuration.

Add standardized call progress tones. My equipment's looking for the reorder, busy, and fast busy tones and isn't happy that it isn't seeing it.

Add occasionally requires manual reset to restore phone operation. This only happened to me once but it has happened to other people on this forum more often.

Also, access restrictions do not work properly. If I block a TCP or UDP port, it doesn't really get blocked.

But overall, I still feel that my RTP300 is working better than the RT31P2 I had, particularly the sound quality.

There's also an intermittent issue with VPN access. Occasionally I lose my VPN connection and the only way to restore it is to power down the router and reboot after a 20s or so delay.

There is serious hope for the reverse echo issue on the RTP300's. Hopefully the firmware will indeed be released for this weekend, however there is no guarantee that it will pass QA testing at TI.

From what I have been able to gather the upgrade to the new version of firmware (will likely be 1.00.47) will only address the echo issue.

Now if we can just get some of these other issues worked out like upload QoS!

If anyone has any detailed information/experience on the differences between voice codecs of PCMU vs G726-32, I would love to hear your comments.

*70 doesn't seem to work either.

Instead it indicates an invalid number has been dialed.

You can get *70 working by calling your friend Vonage tech and asking he/she to enable it on your device.

Ahh. Kind of wierd though.

I will likely need to call them later in the week again anyway. Our handset volume was rediculously loud, now its just loud. They changed rx_gain_an to -50 from -28, apparently they can change it to -78.

I have a partial theory about the reverse echo too actually. We also have the Uniden CLX 485 and a VTECH phone. Both of which have the reverse echo, wereas the TRU8885 does not. During testing it seems like the volume output from the TRU8885 microphone is much lower than the output from the CLX 485.

As a result this would amplify the crosstalk occuring in the phones, which was further enhanced by the extreme volume of our earpiece. The only person to complain about the reverse echo with our TRU8885 was someone who was much louder than other people we have talked to, and we couldn't lower the volume any further.

We also do occasionally get an echo on our side, which is mitigated by reducing our volume, when possible.

It is already almost 4:00 PM EDT on Sunday, and no firmware upgrade yet. Doesn't look like it is coming out this weekend. Time for me to start bugging Vonage again. Maybe I can get on the beta test. The reverse echo is intolerable.
