PostPosted: Mon Sep 05, 2005 10:20 pm    Post subject: Advice before purchase - Moving/DSL to Cable/Number Transfer Reply with quote Back to top

We are moving into our new house in Kennesaw, Ga (just northwest of Atlanta) this Saturday. We are very excited.

As part of the move, we are cancelling our EarthLink DSL and going to cable modem. We would also like to cancel our local phone (see ya BellSouth!) and go to Vonage. We want to port our existing number over and Vonage says it is available.

The cable modem is not going to be installed until Monday. We have a cellphone, so not that big of a deal, but we would like phone capability soon.

What is the best step by step process for this? Should I cancel the DSL first? Should I go buy Vonage retail and activate online or should I buy it online? If I don't cancel my phone service (per Vonage instructions), when does it get cancelled and when can I stop paying for it?

Can someone just point me in the right direction to make sure I am doing this right? I have heard stories of BellSouth getting it transferred in 2 weeks, but I have also heard 2 1/2 months because that person did not do it right.

You have issues if you cancel your number before you port it. There has been at least one post here about someone changing their account so that they kept their number but not their physical service (some type of forwarding only plan). They were then able to port the number away from that plan.

I would purchase your Vonage equipment, via this site or at a retail store, whichever you prefer and begin the port process ASAP.

Separately I would look into moving your phone service as I described, especially if you are losing physical control over the location where the local service is.

I just browsed the Bell South web site. You may be able to suspend your Bell South service and then port your number away. You should check with Bell South about that option.

Here is our plan:

I have placed an order with BellSouth. They are going to move the phoneline to the new house on Saturday (for a small fee of $42.50). Once it is moved, I am taking off all the features except call forwarding.

The Comcast cable broadband (6 Mb down and 768 Kb up rocks!) gets turned on Monday. Once it is one, I will activate the Vonage and put the order in to move the phone number. When Vonage sends me my temp number, I will forward all calls to them temp number.

Once the number is ported, I will cancel the Bellsouth line and be a happy Vonage customer! Smile

As an added side note, this will also give me a phone line at the new house to use to get the TiVo setup. I was planning on using the neighbor's line, but this will make it easier.

Do you see any hitches in this plan? Thanks again for your advice!

Nope, sounds good. The $42.50 bites though.

I would stay clear of LNP's. Vonage service is marginal in our area, even with a cable modem connection uploading at 300kbs. We gave up after 7 weeks of waiting for the number transfer. In our case, we transfer for business reasons due to large number of customers having our 'old number'. After paying for both services for 7 weeks, we gave up. You will spend lots of time on hold waiting basically for the same old excuse if your LNP goes wrong. Don't do it!
