Hi there. I'm new to the forums but I have been reading for a while. I'm fairly new to Vonage as well, having been on the service for only 4 months or so, it being my first Voip service. I only use around 100 minutes a month on the phone, so it might be something bigger that I am not seeing. Because of that, I'm not quite sure what is normal and what is not. but I'm trying to learn. I've searched through this forum but haven't yet found an answer to what i'm trying to figure out. But if I have missed it, I apologize.

Adelphia HSI Standard Teir (5Mb/850kb)

Upload and download speeds
Typical speeds are roughly 4500+ bps down and 780kbps up. Today, it's a bit slow however, around 3Mb/450kbps.

Modem make and model
Terayon TJ715x

Vonage adapter
RT31P2

Network Setup
Modem --> RT31P2 --> 3 PCs and 1 Phone (AT&T 1818)

Issues
Since the start of my experiece with Vonage, I've had very few problems. Calls have been clear, and there are no disruptions. But whenever the other person is on a cell phone, whether they're on the highway at the time, or just sitting around the house, the calls drop.

Today, for instance, my mother called from Tampa/St. Petersburg Florida. There was a slight tin-canning, but nothing horrible. Her cell always seems to sound that like no matter where she is. The call dropped 3 times in an hour, just clicks off, with both Phone ports on the RT31P2 lightning up then going off, with Port 1 finally staying lit steady. According to her, the connection was still there, giving no indication that I had hung up. She had to say "Hello?" a few times before she finally hung up and dialed back.

This happened with my brother in Knoxville, Tennessee as well. His cell service is horrible in the area, with the mountains and the constantly swapping towers and signal fades. He knows it's bad. And sure enough, when he dials me, we get disconnected in the same manner.

When dialing local calls, or when calls local dial me, I have never been cut off and the sound is as clear as any POTS line.

How normal are dropped calls to/from cells? Should I be concerned that something is wrong? Is there something I can do to prevent it?

I have not noticed any problems such as the ones you described. I would be more concerned about the 3 calls dropped in an hour. Seeing as you only make 100 minutes of calls per month I doubt you have any POTS calls that long, but I would try to make a long test call to a POTS number to ensure that there isn't something (a DNS problem perhaps) dropping your Internet connection every twenty minutes.

You quality numbers are fine, I expect that if your POTS call quality is good. You may want to run PingPlotter for an hour or so to see if you are having service drop outs at some fixed interval.

Failing that I would suggest this is a problem with the mobile carriers.

I know this is an older thread, but it's mine, and it's still relevant. My problem with cell phones has not changed. No matter who or where is talking to me on a cell phone, regardless of who originated the call, the call drops on MY end. The router resets. I don't know what to do at this point.

Talked to Florida today for 9 minutes before it dropped. Then 3 minutes. Finally, my mom used the home line (which isn't free for her on weekends) for 29 minutes without any issues.

I think Scerruti's suggestion is still relevant. Try a long call to a POTs line and see how that goes. Why not call your Mom on her land line, since that _is_ free for you. See if you can keep the line open for an hour or so. So far it still sounds like an issue with the cell phone carriers.

Vonage _does_ offer limited minute plans so it's not necessarily free. although his earlier post about ~100 minutes per month would make it seem that way, who knows how much the usage has increased, etc.
at any rate, has anyone actually mentioned the cell phone carrier(s)? I might have missed it, but I didn't see mention of them.

The 100 minutes per month was what I had in mind when I said "free", but you're right. You're also right that no one has identified the cell phone carriers. It would be nice to know whether more than one is involved.

Do you think the part about the connection apparently staying open from the mother's point of view is significant? How about that business with the phone lights on the RT31P2 ? That's the one thing that suggests a Vonage issue to me.

Well, I've talked to many people over the course since the first post. And here's the situation: No matter the carrier on the POTS line, it works and is stable. I've never had a dropped call. While calling cell phones, I'm dropped EVERY time, seemingly regardless of the time spent on the call. For instance, my mom has Verizon in Florida. I've talked to my brother in Tennessee who has Sprint. Buddy in Washington State has Nextel, and they ALL drop.

It's a Vonage issue on my end. The router resets or just kills the connection. Whether it's due to the hardware on the cell's ends, I have no clue. But on my end, the call is disconnected. Sometimes the router resets completely and goes through it's checks then boots back up. Sometimes it just hangs up the call.

And I don't spend nearly the 500 minutes I pay for every month. usually I spend under 100 minutes. So calling them on the POTS line isn't any complication. They just usually call me because her cell minutes are free after 9pm and on weekends.

You seem to have done all the right things, and are still getting really odd results. I think a call to customer service is definitely in order. That business with the router certainly seems to make it a Vonage issue.
