PostPosted: Mon Sep 05, 2005 12:18 pm    Post subject: lose dial tone after lightning storms Reply with quote Back to top

I'll start with my problem because this might precede the need to post all of the extra info:

I live in Florida and we receive lightning storms on an almost daily basis during the summer.

And ever since the summer has started, I've lost dial tone numerous times. My internet works perfectly despite this... I've had the computer plugged directly to the router and through a wireless router, and no matter what I haven't had any broadband internet issues.

Each time I've lost dial tone, I call up Vonage, speak to a customer service representative who takes me through about an hour's worth of "tests," and then determines that I have a "defective router."

Believe it or not, I'm currently on my fourth router--and my fifth is in the mail. Every time I mention the issue, the tech representative skirts around it and says "it shouldn't happen this time" or "I'm not sure what you're problem is." The representatives can't provide any advice or assistance or ANYTHING. They just send another router. It is INCREDIBLY frustrating.

We've already decided to leave Vonage and switch to a regular phone line. Of course, it's possible we'll go back, but only if somebody has any advice that will actually keep my router working properly after storms. It just doesn't make sense... why would Vonage routers be the only thing affected during a lightning storm? Why wouldn't any other computer parts I own also become defective?

Anyway, for the rest of the info:
1. Boca Raton, FL
2. Adelphia Cable
3. Upload:426 kbps Download: 954 kbps
4. Terayon TJ 715 Modem
5. Type of Vonage adapter used: Linksys RTP300 (the tech support guy told me that *this* router would somehow not break during lightning storms, unlike my old linksys routers)
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Cable modem---->Linksys wireless router---->Vonage router (I've tried other set ups)
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc --Issue above
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston. (no use)

Thanks for any help you can offer!

this was discussed a little while ago, grounding was a big issue.. and i'm guessing you had the RT31P2 which was very suceptable to lighting/power surges...

Also as a side note, Adelphia has been having some bigtime issues in parts of Boca with major packet loss and latency....
I am up in Stuart, and have got hammered lately also. Do you have Vonage wired through out the whole house?
Usually, when the router dies, the internet connectivity goes with it. I would REALLY make sure everything is grounded with surge protectors etc....
Also, before you ditch 100%, try the RTP300 before you cancel..
ALSO, I would ditch the Terayon and have Adelphia swap it out for a Motorola SB51 series...

You're getting less than 1Mbps on downloads on your cable connection? Something sounds screwy with your signal there. Also, I have Comcast for internet at my other residence and ANY minor power burp will knock the internet connection offline for 5 or so minutes. I'm running battery backup + auto-transfer generator down there, so it's not my end. Comcast fessed up & admitted that their distribution amps along the streets are powered by the FP&L poles nearby, so any minor outage will take their signal offline.

I've actually been told by others that I should trade in my terayon. I'll give adelphia a call. Do they typically put up a fight when people ask to trade modems?

Yeah, Vonage is wired through out the whole house.

I've never had a problem with internet connectivity in this house... despite all three routers dying on me, the terayon has been running smoothly (albeit slowly).

I'm currently running the RTP300, which is my fourth router. It lasted a little longer than the others, but alas, it too has died.

Yeah adelphia is pretty crappy in my town (read comment above yours), not-to-mention my modem isn't up to par. I doubt that it has anything to do with the router dying on me, though.

I'm currently running the RTP300, which just died.

I read the posts, but I'm still confused. How do I actually FIX this grounding issue? What do I do/where do I go?

You are not grounded somewhere...Also have you disconnected the POTS line coming into the house? I am assuming you have.

http://www.vonage-forum.com/home-wiring-installation-guide.html

Here is a guide for you here on the forum. But your problem is 99.9999999% internal and not a Vonage issue.

Also, you should have no problem getting a new modem from Adelphia. Press the issue a bit and you should be ok no problem...

And I would also check your signal levels coming into that modem...
What tier are you on with Adelphia?

There should be a Grounding point in your DEMARC box (phone wiring junction block) as Trowski said, check to make sure your old Landline providers wires comming into yoru house are D/C'd ..

connect your grounding point to your homes electrical wiring ground point, as well, ground your cable line to yoru homes electrical grounds.. make sure all your grounds are connected as one.. alot of the time you'll find you cable may be grounded to your witer pipes, and your phone may be connected there as well, or to it's own ground, or like in my old house, there was no ground at all on the phone wiring..

also, you cold try just conecting one phone to your ATA for a monh or so durring osm estorms and see if it still goes out, this would let you know if it's a home wiring problem or something else..

With the transfer speeds as slow as they are, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a grounding issue on the cable line as well.
