I can't help but notice that a lot of people who are having problems with their RTP 300 are describing situations that sound as if a power outage took place.

We have frequent power outages in Boston. So here's a tip:

1) If your power goes out, even for a brief moment, you may need to "Power Cycle" because the phone adapter/router (like any router) may not be able to re-establish a connection if it turns on at the same time as the cable modem.

2) To power cycle you unplug from the end of the chain of modem/routers in reverse order working back to the cable modem. Wait a minute or two. Then plug each unit back in beginning with the cable modem and working your way to the end of the chain.

My set up looks like this: Cable modem -> RTP 300 -> Airport Express router.

When I power cycle I unplug the Airport Express, then I unplug the RTP 300, then I unplug the cable modem. I wait a few minutes and then I plug-in the cable modem, then the RTP 300, then the Airport Express.

I've noticed people unplugging the cable modem while leaving the RTP 300 powered... that's a recipe for bad behavior!

Not really, on that last part anyway. You can unplug your cable modem and leave your router powered. It's very similar to a service outage. Once the router realizes that the modem is not there (aka packets aren't sending out) it will start the DHCP process again.

With this being said, it is still a good idea to wait about 2 minutes after turning on your modem before powering up your router.

BTW... no power outage because my router still had an IP which meant that if there was a power outage, it was at the service.

In Boston, regardless of power outage or ISP service disruption, it's necessary to power-cycle if you have Comcast.

We all do it. It's the only way in my neighborhood that we can get back online after a Comcast outage or NStar outage.

Comcast equipment and service seems to vary from region to region... just thought I'd share that for some of us it's...

Power Cycle, Power Cycle, Power Cycle!

Pdrayton, which part of Boston are you in?
Also, Power Cycle is a great rule of thumb anytime...I cycle my gear at least once a week...

BTW, I'm in SE Massachusetts. I haven't noticed this because I use my DSL connection for Vonage and Comcast cable modem for everything else. Smile

I'm in JP, not far from Back Bay/South End. We have weekly power outages in JP lasting an hour or longer. Our longest outage this Summer was a whopping 24 hours.

Just an update. I found a solution to my problem... I think. I've not lost tone with my phone but I did loose DNS. I found this was because I was trying to use it as a DNS proxy but couldn't unless I had gotten my local IP via DHCP.

Has someone setup the Linksys adapter/router that is currently provided by Vonage and if it works well in India with Airtel broadband. (i think its Linksys RTP300)
I am trying to send it to my family in Haryana..They don't have a router and are not very computer savvy..so an simpler set up is desired.

Any suggestions for any alternate adapter that comes with router - if some other model has a better/easier setup.

I also have packet8 option..but that definitely requires a router-unless i buy 150$ uniden system.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Power outtages in Boston are frequent? That surprises me.

I have Comcast in Ashalnd, MA (next to Framingham). We rarely lose power (maybe once a year due to an accident on the main road). And it's usually fixed within an hour. We have NStar.

My RTP300 has never lost dialtone in the couple months I've had it. I never have had to reboot it manually. A few times, Vonage service went bonkers (as noted on their web site) and we lost the ability to dial out, but that wasn't an RTP300 issue.
