PostPosted: Fri Sep 02, 2005 7:45 pm    Post subject: QOS Support for RTP300 - Vontage Deal Killer? Reply with quote Back to top

I have been trying to get help with QOS and the RTP300. The Vontage technical team has not been very helpful. Unfortunately they are not familiar with the RTP300. I have a good 4.5 MB/sec broadband connection(tested). I have limited my downloads to very conservative limits. I have set the bandwidth saver set to normal. I am still having audio voice breakup when downloading files. I do not think I should have to shell out cash for a new hardware to address this issue.

Anyone else seeing these problems? Any solutions?

Other than this and minor echo problems I am otherwise happy with Vontage but this could be a show stopper….

HI! Please read the Sticky Posts at the top of the page and please tell us about your set up. What other devices are you using like modems, WiFi, etc. Also, run the tests that are asked for and post them here. I'm sure someone of us will be able to help you out. Lol

Ok, I had my stats reversed. inbound/download is ok, outbond /upload is where I am seeing a problem... I hear ok, others can not hear me.

Welcome to the club:
WRTP54G QoS Priority for Voice Traffic not sufficient?
qos and bittorrent
How to maintain voice quality when sharing DSL line?
WRTP54G and Bittorrents Slowdown

What types of downloads are you doing? If you're doing something like downloading torrents, then the upstream bandwidth that peers use to download from you can get sucked up pretty quickly.

Personally, I think using the Vonage-supplied equipment as a router is only feasible only for email and web browsing environments . If you're going to be doing things like online gaming, download torrents, etc., then you should use the RTP300 as a phone adapter only and have it sitting behind a router with a quality QoS implementation.

With my setup, I can download multiple torrents simultaneously while making a phone call...

Hopefully some updated firmware will address the issue. I personally upload other things not using software like bittorrent and I shouldn't need to limit the bandwidth on the application level. The Vonage adapter should be able to handle it. If it doesn't I'll eventually purchase a router that has built in QoS but I'm hopeful that they'll solve it. QoS can be properly managed with code so hopefully a future release of firmware will deal with it.

I agree...

Since the Vonage routers give the appearance of supporting some sort of QoS functionality, there should be a simple way for the average user to make use of it. And if they can't, then Vonage tech support should be able to help them do it.

The QoS functionality provided by my WRT54GS/Sveasoft setup works like a champ. The only thing is that a setup like that is way over the head of the average user.

That's life on the bleeding edge I guess...

The WRT54GS/Sveasoft is really tempting and seems to be a favorite. A few things stopping me is

1) I already have Motorola Wireless device

2) If I buy a new wireless device, I think i'd want to go with that Belkin Pre-N device. A friend of mine bought it and we took his laptop, walked all the way down the street and still picked up a signal with a standard G card. He gets 5 full bars everywhere in his house, including his basement.

How is the wireless range on the WRT54GS? Also, out of curiosity, I was looking at the config settings - was wondering how you have QoS setup with Vonage on that device.
