If you're not in a hurry, you may be in luck with the Belkin: Sveasoft Firmware for Belkin F5D8230 pre-N Router

I've found the range of the WRT54GS to be quite good. I have it on the second floor of my house and get a good signal in the basement and even out in the yard.

I just set someone up with a couple of V2 WRT54GS's who couldn't get a decent signal in an office over their garage. He has one WRT as a main router in the basement and we used the other WRT as a WDS repeater to provide coverage for the office. The Sveasoft firmware allows you to adjust the wireless transmit power from 0 - 251 mw (default 28 mw), and setting the repeater to 50 mw did the trick.

Actually, I have not had an issue with QOS and online gaming. I can easily play Halo etc online while the wife is on the phone...

I'm having QoS issues also. If they don't get it fixed soon, I'm going back to Verizon.

I was in the same arena as you 2 years ago. NO matter what I tried I had crappy outgoing with ANY data usage.

I had the old Moto ata. If you ask me, having something act as a router, switch, and a phone adapter AND expect it to do QoS for free is/was a little too much.

My solution: Linksys wrt54gs and add on the Svesoft firmware. It took a bit of tweaking, but now I can say I have rock solid Vonage service.

When my Moto ata bit the dust, I got a and I immediately had the same problems
(now we got wireless, router, switch and phone adapter in one box)
- until I went back to my trusty modified linksys.

All I did was turn off the wireless on the new adapter and went back to using the wrt54g wireless.

With the firmware tweaks I can get about 1/2 block range before there are connection problems.

Thanks! Very informative and helpful post! One more question, if today in Sept 2005 you needed to go buy a router would you still recommend the wrt54gs w/Svesoft or would you consider trying the Belkin Pre-N? I'm sure this is not an easy question to answer without an opportunity for a detailed comparison but opinion/recommendation here counts.

Knowing that you can get 1/2 block with the wrt54gs is now really helping me to take a really close look at it.

I try to be as unbiased as I can, but everyone knows that is humanly impossible.

History:
First router - netgear - rp614 wired liked it but flimsy construction it dropped and broke -

Second router (wireless) F5D7230-4 - went through 3 of them under warranty (but I still have the wireless NICs.....)

Third router - got a deal on a netgear wgr614 - liked it but it was flimsy too - the power jack if bumped the power went out - i soldered the connector and it worked for a while ...

Fourth - (current) - wrt54gs - then I got a great deal on a this with 2 speedbooster compatible nics...

What would I buy? I would buy anything that I had researched add-on firmware for. The Sveasoft (and other variations) made the Linksys do what I wanted my router to do and quite well at that.

There are other routers out there that have either great on-board firmware (the HotBrick 6000 comes to mind but it is like $4k!), but at the consumer level I have come to like the linksys and its derivatives. Nowadays - I would like to build my own firewall from *nix (unix/linux, etc). I currently use this type of config on our ASP platforms and it is quite exciting to learn and very flexible but not for the home consumer.

In conclusion, for "out-of the-box" setup and addon - the Linksys and the flexibility and availability of other firmwares make it the choice for me.

By the way - why do my posts seem so long? Do I babble too much? Smile

Also, for all of you having QOS issues, please post your UL/DL speeds etc...and when the problem occurs, what your network looks like, heck, everything you should post.

Unfortunately issues like this is not the fault of companies like Vonage.

Voip is data traffic (yup over IP) and is treated just like other traffic on IP.

Also you can't go by what your RoadRunner/ISP tells you that you have for upload/download speeds - these are constantly in flux.

If Vonage changed your router to prioritized their service, what would come out of this? Customer complaints like "My LimeWire is slow or won't connect!" or "AIM work work or is too slow!" A customer service nightmare.

What we need to do is review the sticky here on QoS and apply those techniques and all should be fine.

As for my recommendations - get a Linksys WRT54G/GS router and run a 3rd party firmware that lets you do real QoS. A real quality product with a great firmware that will let you tweak just about anything...

I disagree with this statement. The only time the other services would be slow is when a call is in progress. At this early stage of Voip, most users are knowledgeable enough to understand this need. Also, we should be given an option to prioritize Voip traffic.
