I am a Vonage newbie...I love it. Most of my calls are excellent, however I get an occassional ehoe either on my end or on the the other person's end. Is this occassional phenomenon normal?

I am running a toshiba cable modem from road runner with a wireless g router from linksys. I am using the pap2 adapter since I didn't need an additional piece of hardware with a router. I have had my wireless router working for over a year already so adding on the pap 2 was the wisest and easiest choice for me. I have my primary number plugged in and a fax number in the other.

My service is 99 percent excellent (which is more than I can say about t he telco lol), however I do get that occassional ehcoing.... Is this to be expected or normal?

Please elaborate.

thanks, Howie

The first day I had the RTP300, calls had a considerable amount of static, but would get better during the call, then the next call would have static, but not as much as the call before, and so on. By the end of the day, there was virtually no static, and from the second day on, the only thing I've ever noticed was an occasional echo that would only be heard by the person I'm talking to, and only during the first 2 or 3 seconds of the call. (They sometimes hear an echo when they say "Hello", but for the rest of the call everything sounds perfect).

On my end, sound is very good. At the other, people hear an echo of their voice most of the time. I didn't realized until a few persons complained about the echo.

Apparently, it is common problem that would be related to a bug in the TI chipset inside the Linksys router and the speed of the broadband connection. There are several threads discussing this issue on the forum.
The problem gets worse on busy hours of the day.

I am still on my 30-day trial so, I'd like to see the problem fixed before it ends.

Hi! Occasional echoes can be caused by poor POTS wiring at the other end of the call. So, if it is of a concern to you, keep track of the calls that have echo. If they are usually the same person, then it is safe to say that the problem is on their end. Lol

Is this was true why does it occur on a cell phone call too?
I have this echo problem with several different people that i call
I called tech dept at Vonage and they said it was a packet lost problem with adelphia.
Well i spent almost a hour with level 2 tech at Adelphia and he told me i have no packet lost.
So me thinks someone is bs'ing me
This echo problem is among the other problems i have had over the past couple of months that i have had the service

Something new just about every day lately

random clicking one day
garbled audio one day

I tried getting a new adapter thinking that might be the problem but Vonage said no

I"m not ready to drop Vonage but it is getting close

Oh I get 5 mbps download
386 up

Test my Voip says 4.5
So I have no idea what the problem is

Vonage now tells me that if a phone call has at least one person using a cordless phone or headset that this can cause the 'echo' effect for one or more of the users.

If I am using a 'corded' phone and the party I am talking to has a 'corded' phone the problem doesn't seem to happen, so I believe what they said.

By the way,,, using phone calls with Vonage takes away from the 'upload' and not from the download..... I have tested this and it IS true...u willl notice this if u check your upload speed before using Vonage and then again while using Vonage.

My download stays at about 6.92 mbps and my upload is about 499kbps without Vonage and about 420kbps upload while using Vonage. So Vonage TAKES FROM YOUR UPLOAD WHEN U USE IT BIG TIME.

I am paying road runner extra for their premium service so I keep the upload a little higher for Vonage. they say I should get 512 instead of 384 for the on the upload and 8mbps, not 5 mbps on the download... BUT AGAIN ITS THE UPLOAD BANDWIDTH THAT VONGAGE **** UP.

It's still their fault it's echoing. Properly functioning Voip equipment is supposed to analyze the voice streams and remove echoes when they occur.

Vonage uses upload and download bandwidth equally; it's 90kbps for both. Take 90kbps from 6.92Mbps and you've got 6.91Mbps. Don't blame Vonage when your upload speed is 14 times slower than your download to begin with.

What happens when you leave you cordless phone in he chargingbase and connect a headset? Does the cho go away?
Or, is there a corded phone out there with a basic headphone jack?

using a headset is the same since it usually is not a corded to jacck device. I myself have boght a couple of corded phones to use, and if the other party is using a corded phone there is never an echo. Not very practical thought when most folks use a cordless headset. However, that is the key factor that causese the echo
