Speeds for the military are the same as for civilians as far as I know. (Yes I am a wise guy.) Using normal quality you should have 30Kbps in both directions. Some people have gotten Voip to work over dial up.

Yes.

Period, it's the little dot next to the "," near the bottom of the keyboard. (Oops, still a wise guy, maybe I shouldn't be posting this late at night.)
Yes, you are correct.

Of course I should have done a bit more fact checking before I posted this and then got quoted in the digest.
Vonage recommends a minimum of 90kbps because "we insist on consistent high quality audio for all your calls".
The technical requirements at 30kbps in both directions are for the lowest call quality and your connection has to be dedicated to doing the phone call. I probably should have padded this out a bit for overhead.
What that means is that while it is possible to do Voip over dial-up you will not have the minimum bandwidth to meet Vonage's definition of acceptable quality. Also, you will need to have a very good dial-up connection to make it work. People who have gotten this to work may also have developed speaking habits that limit simultaneous conversation. Two parties talking at the same time might very well saturate even a good dial up connection. |
