If this question has already been posted forgive me. I searched for this topic and really found nothing.

I am new to Vonage and before I start slamming tech support let me say that so far I am incredibly pleased with the service. It is reliable and have had not one complaint about voice quality. Also I have had no major problems to speak of except as noted below. On most questions or issues Vonage has responded quickly with solid information.

Vonage appears to be quite incapable of resolving this problem, I thought I would pass along my problem to you folks. There seems to be quite a bit more intelligence here than with some of the folks I have spoken to at Vonage about this.

My problem is when I make an outbound call the receiving end shows “Vonage Holdings” as the caller id name with my Vonage assigned telephone number. I got an email this morning stating that this problem had been corrected. It has not.

I have had Vonage techs tell me that this is not right. Duh! Another said my name should show up and finally yesterday another guru said due to privacy issues as stated in policy my name will not show up. I did not read the privacy or terms of service in detail but I did not see anything about is in either in my quick scan.

Is anybody else experiencing this problem? Vonage has told me that some Vonage numbers show this and others don’t.
Does anyone know how outbound caller id works? Where is it generated etc. Vonage tells me it is on there end.
How can I get “Vonage Holdings” to disappear? Other than canceling which if I can not get this resolved, I will. I do not want to advertise for Vonage or have someone not pick up the phone for fear it is a sales call.

You number will be the only thing that will show on outbound caller id. If they are seeing Vonage Holdings, then they can fix that but technical support will need to give a ticket to the engineers to so.

Well granted some Vonage CS might not be all their with current policies and such, but to speak about their intelligence? I can go down the list of of customers with "intelligence". Lets keep this strictly to you Caller ID issue.

It seems to me that you now have a choice in what is displayed on your called person's Caller Id box. You can leave the "Vonage Holdings" message to be displayed or you can allow Vonage to fix it and have "Unknown" displayed instead. Frustrated

I'm still not clear on why "Vonage Holdings" or "Unknown" are the only two choices here.

I've read varying stories in the different forums.

One story is that the names of Vonage customers don't get into the caller id database that is controlled by the phone companies. The part of this story that is not entirely clear is the reasons why they don't get into that database ... i.e. whether it is because Vonage doesn't submit them, or because the phone companies (or whoever controls the database won't accept them), or because Vonage that the database holder can't come to an agreement, or because their systems are incompatible...

Another story is that it has something to do with signalling. This one I don't entirely buy, since some folks claim to have been able to "hack the binary" of the software used with SoftPhone to be able to insert whatever they want for the Caller ID field.

The whole issue seems kind of murky, and it would be great to have an authoritative explanation of why, when calling from a Vonage phone, the caller id of the called party doesn't just "do the right thing". It would also be nice to know whether Vonage's story is that this is something that will change, sooner, later, or never.
