Can anyone confirm use of the UTStarCom F1000 phone with Vonage over WiFi?

If so, could you give me a quick +/- list?

If it doesn't work, what phones do?

Hi Karsten,

I believe this is (one of) the WiFi handsets that Vonage is testing.

The challenge of the WiFi SIP Handsets is getting them to connect to networks that require authorization beyond the WEP or shared key auth options on the F1000.

There is an interesting article about the Hitachi WirelessIP-5000 - It's a more expensive handset, but if the new (rumored) firmware delivers...being able to use this in public hotspots would be excellent!

The article is here:New WIP-5000 VoIP WiFi Firmware?

This would make the WiFi option very cool!

If this phone works with Vonage, and I suspect that it does, then the non-Vonage branded phone is likely to only work with the Vonage SoftPhone option meaning extra cost and limited minutes.

I would suspect that the Vonage branded units will be capable of being used as the main device on a Vonage plan.

The big drawback I have heard about WiFi phones in general, beyond the previously mentioned hot spot authorization, is battery life. Frankly I think the phones are ugly and lack a significant number of features. I doubt that first generation WiFi phones are going to become all that popular, but suspect that WiFi capability and SoftPhone software on mobile phones will take off.

scerruti,

You got it! I forgot about the extra charges and all...and yes, the Vonage branded WiFi handset would then be the better (cheaper) option.

Battery Life...
The battery life is not nearly as long as cell/mobiles (pre-3G), but the F1000 and the WIP5000 do have reasonable lasting power.

The F1000, with its more basic options and design, lasts longer on a single charge -> simplicity has it's advantages.

I would not be surprised if Vonage were evaluating more than one WiFi Handset.

(The WIP-5000 is definitely a sweet phone though.)

Basically, we need a WiFi phone for use in our warehouse.

I'm not so concerned about battery life as it's not to replace or augment a cell phone - same for the looks. We just need something that's compatible and functional.

Any suggestions?

karsten,

The F1000 will probably do the trick but I've seen other posts here that hint that Vonage may not help you configure the phone.

Give them a ring and see if you can push for a branded WiFi phone, maybe?

If you want to read more about the F1000, Here's a review of the UTStarcom F1000 that may help.

Maybe people on that website can help you configure it as well, if you needed help, that is.

I doubt that, I seriously doubt that. That site would need some forum members other than yourself.

Stop trolling this site looking for forum members. It is very obvious what you are doing.

My mistake, the post I saw was about the ZyXEL P2000. Possibly another candidate for you Karsten.

Ref: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic7502.html+wifi

As you can see from the post ref above...others have used it successfully with Vonage.

Reviewing the choices from this discussion:
1. UTStarcom F1000 is being tested by Vonage and the handset I had was configured ready for Vonage though i didn not have an active account.
2. Hitachi WIP5000 works well for a colleague whose company uses several of them with Vonage for his office line. He travels between offices and uses Vonage from all of them with no problems.
3. ZyXel P2000 has worked for others here (I have no direct knowledge of that handset).

The DTMF signalling problem may be an issue for all three, but it's easily overcome. I would expect firmware upgrades to be coming for 1 and 2 above as they are (all) very new handsets.

LuisPR, As for your comment, I get the feeling there's nothing I could say to correct your perception of me, so I'll remain silent on that.

However, if my posts are not helpful, constructive criticism is welcomed.

Actually - I liked the link you sent earlier. Good info on the phone. Will check out the other phones you just listed as well.

Thanks!

From what I've read so far, it sounds like Vonage doesn't provide support for any of these phones. Keeping that in mind, how's the support from the manufacturer in regards to use with Vonage?

Karsten,

Sorry for the late reply here.

From my limited knowledge on the support side, it seems that both Hitachi Cable (WIP5000) and UTStarcom (F1000) are originally networking equipment companies and their support will most likely be through the reseller or possibly distributor.

In that case, it's best to ask the reseller about support before purchasing one of the handsets.

vg
p.s. Here in the UK, I know there are several resellers who claim to have these handsets, but still cannot ship any...it's worth evaluating the reseller before purchasing.
