To anyone trying to call the Ft. Myers, FL area, don't expect to get through for the next few days. As an aside, This sort of crap happens quite frequently down here. I see plenty of people complain and say they're going back to a land line, but in this case, your landline's out and so is your 911 service if you're in this area:

Phones out until at least Thursday
NBC2 News
Posted on: Tuesday, August 30, 2005

FORT MYERS — Sprint estimates 20,000 people are without phone service after a major fiber optic line was cut in Lee County. The company says service will not be restored until Thursday at the earliest.

Construction crews installing new sewer lines hit the fiber optic line around 8:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Gladiolus Drive and Summerlin Road.

The eastbound lanes of Gladiolus have been reduced to one lane, causing major traffic headaches on that road as well as northbound Summerlin.

"This is a major outage. In my 35 years in the business, I've never seen anything like this. We're going to have crews working 24 hours straight for three or four days," said Sprint's Steve Personette.

In addition to the 20,000 without phone service, the sheriff's office data lines and deputies' mobile, in-car computers were affected by the outage.

"It just makes you realize how much you rely on it and becomes second nature to you – becomes an extra hand so to speak," sheriff's Corporal Larry King said of the loss of technology.

The cut is also affecting 9-1-1 service, but a backup system in place is handling the traffic.

Thousands still without phone service in Ft. Myers

Sprint's phone lines cut six times in last year
Kathryn Simmons - NBC-2.com

LEE COUNTY— A crew from Phoenix Construction cut several cables Monday night, cutting phone service off to 20,000 Sprint customers. As workers fix the cables, Sprint and Phoenix Construction are trying to piece together what happened.

Chopping up and getting rid of thousands of feet of thick, heavy cables and threading in the new ones is a daunting task.

Late Monday, a Phoenix Construction worker cut into Sprint phone lines on Gladiolus Drive.

"This is a major, major, major cable cut," said Sprint Spokesperson Steve Personette.

Personette says the incident is still under investigation.

NBC2 has reported Sprint lines being cut in Lee and Collier counties six times in the past nine months.

Personette says all of those incidents are still under investigation.

Phoenix Construction sent NBC2 paperwork dated August 23, 2005 from "The Sunshine State One Call of Florida." by state law contractors have to call this number before digging and wait for utility companies to respond.

The ticket shows Sprint marked the ground where cables were located. Ron Golinowsky, the Vice President of Phoenix Construction says the concrete wasn't marked where they were digging.

"There were no paint marks. There should have been orange paint marks on that pavement and there was not," said Golinowsky.

Sprint says that incident is under investigation as well.

Sprint crews and a company hired to help are working 24 hours a day to get the phone lines back up and running.

The Lee County Sheriff Office dropped a citation against Phoenix Construction connected to this incident because Phoenix provided paperwork showing they were cleared to dig.

Good thing they saved the paperwork. I had locators come out to my house so I could do some digging. They located in a totally wrong area. I knew they had to be wrong. Called them back. Waited. It's just good they weren't digging near a gas line. Was it fiber or copper that took the hit? If it was a copper trunk then somebody is making good overtime money.

I honestly don't know if it's a copper line or a fiber line... For fun, I'd hope it's the former. Nothing more fun than attempting to splice in thousands of pretty color-coded wires together for hours on end.

As far as the gas line goes, we had that problem about 2 years ago, fun for the whole family. A contractor nailed a gas line on a US41 construction project. Well, it shut down US41 for a few days, which doesn't sound like a big deal until you realize that in that area, there's only 3 north-south roads, US41, Old US41, and I-75... Safe to say travel between the counties there was close to non-existent until they got it repaired.

Sprint strikes again!!!

First a fiber cut on Wednesday, which knocked out phone service to my office. Sprint claims only 12,000 customers were affected, but from the geographical area that was affected, but I think it's probably 2x-3x that in actuality. Meanwhile, my Vonage adapter kept chugging along like nothing was wrong.

Then...

another fiber cut on Thursday, affecting a different area, another couple thousand landline customers and 20 cell towers (including other co's towers, such as Verizon and Alltel). I can only imagine how many people 20 cell towers service in a highly congested area.

Maybe landline service is more reliable in other parts of the country, but it's anything but down here. Now up to 16 days this year without landline phone service! woohoo! Glad I have Vonage.
