I am having a problem with port forwarding now that I've added a Vonage/Linksys RT31P2 phone adaptor router in front of my Linksys WRT54G Wireless router.

If I plug in my PC directly into to the Vonage router, I can port forward and it works, but when I need to keep my PC hooked up to the wireless router, so it is part of my network.

So I tried to forward the port to the wireless router IP address and then from there to my individual PC IP address, but it doesn't work for some reason.

Has anyone had the same issue or any idea of how to remedy it? Thanks!

Could you provide more details about your setup?

For example, if you are just using the WRT54G as a WAP, you can keep everything in the RT31P2's LAN IP range by connecting a LAN port of the RT31P2 to a LAN (and not WAN) port of the WRT54G.

I have my cable modem going into the RT31P2 and then I have the WRT54G plugged into the first of the three Ethernet ports on the back of the RT31P2. Then I have my PC plugged into the first of the Ethernet ports on the WRT54G (and my laptop is plugged into the 2nd Ethernet port with another computer upstairs using the wireless.)

RT31P2
LOCAL NETWORK IP ADDRESS – 192.168.5.1

WRT54G
INTERNET IP ADDRESS – 192.168.5.100
LOCAL NETOWRK IP ADDRESS 192.168.5.220

DESKTOP PC IP ADDRESS - 192.168.5.221

So on the RT31P2, I have port forwarding for Bittorrent/Azureus port 6542 set to forward to 192.168.5.100.

And then on the WRT54G, I have it forward 6542 to 192.168.5.221 .

But for some reason, this isn’t working.

I tried to set the forwarding on the RT31P2 to forward to port 192.168.5.221, but this doesn't work either although I didn't expect it to.

As I said, if I directly connect the PC to the RT31P2, I can get port forwarding to work, but I need to be able to forward through both the routers and to my PC.

Thanks for any help..

Are both devices doing DHCP?

With the way I read your current setup your RT31P2 sends the request to the WRT54G who sends it back to the RT31P2 because it sees that the RT31P2 is the main connecton for the 192.168.5.1/24 network maybe you should enable DHCP on the WRT54G and have it be somthing else like 192.168.4.1/24 that way your laptop on't be on the same subnet as the RT31P2

Another idea would be to set the WRT54G to no DHCP a internal static address of 192.168.5.100 and then plug in the lan side, not the wan, to the RT31P2, then you would want the RT31P2 to forward the ports to 192.168.1.221 (Desktop). this would allow you to use the wireless on the WRT54G and the DCHP server on the RT31P2.

[quote="HunterMcD"]

Both devices are set up for DCHP and it seems to be working fine when I check the DCHP list and can see the router/computers listed correctly.

I don't understand about plugging the WRT54G into a different place on the RT31P2. There are only 3 Ethernet ports to plug it in there. Thanks for the ideas though.

To have both functioning like you have right now you need to have the WRT54G on a diffrent network.

What do you mean on a different network? On a different network than what? Everything seems to work fine except the port forwarding.

I don't see how I could possible change the way the routers are plugged in and still have them work. I was hoping there was a setting I could change in the router settings to make it work.

All you need to do is change the internal network for the WRT54G oyu will want to ahve the WRT54G give out addresses that are not 192.168.5.xxx addresses. What is currently happening is the WRT54G see it should forward to 192.168.5.221 so it sends it back to the RT31P2 which doesn't have a 221.

If you want everything in the same network, then don't use the WAN port on the WRT54G to connect it to the RT31P2. Just disable the WRT54G's DHCP server, connect one of its LAN ports to a LAN port on the RT31P2, and allow the RT31P2's DHCP server to hand out ip addresses.
