I ordered another Directv tivo to be installed as the deal of $100 rebate seemed good. Told the sales person I had Vonage and that I wanted to make sure they would install it. She said the installers knew how to use DSL filters and dance with their feet in the correct order to make them work. I was hoping they could make my existing one work as well. However, the installer told me all their phone reps were from the Philippines or India, spoke the wrong dialect of english had their heads up their A..... and refused to even try to install it. He told me he would not get paid if it did not have a LAND phone line. He also told me Directv is super paranoid and that is why there is no USB support. Then he told me TIVO functionality would cease after about 6 weeks of no phone line. I called them back a few days later since they had kindly charged me the $100 for a receiver I did not get. Then I canceled with Directv. DISH Network has a 100 hour DVR, comes with 2 remotes, can feed 2 TV's, installation is free and if the phone line is not working or just plain not connected they don't turn it off. They will charge an extra $4.99 if it is not on a working phone line. So, ditch the paranoid Directv folks and get Dish Network. I had them years ago and they were actually better. When we moved we had to go to Directv for 1 station that DISH did not have. Now we don't need that station and i sure don't need the hassles.

The installer was either mistaken or outright lied to you. If someone came to my house and complained about phone reps based on their nationality I would escort them to the door and complain to their supervisor and to DirecTV. DirecTV does not require a phone line except for certain sports subscriptions and ordering PPV by remote. TiVo will display nag screens after about 30 days if you don't make calls. Although software upgrades are delivered via satellite, you will not be able to activate them if you don't have a phone line.

The only reason I could think that the installer may feel he wouldn't get paid is because DirecTV may not allow you to mirror your subscription onto a second receiver without a phone line. I have never heard anyone bringing this up as a problem before though.

Dish DVR is not the same as TiVo. I am sure you will be happy with your setup, but I would never recommend Dish as an alternative for someone who is interested in DirecTiVo. I certainly wouldn't recommend it based on the opinion of a single installer rather than on facts that can easily be verified on DirecTV's web site.

Well,

I could complain about his attitude and comments. What would that get me? An upset man who knows where I live.....

Besides, he may be the one who comes to install for Dish Network as well. I suspect they are all subcontractors.

The Dish Folks called to confirm the install. My wife told me some lady from India called to confirm the dish install. LOL!

Where on Directv's site does it say the Directv TIVO does not need a land line?

What do you consider Tivo's advantages over DISH DVR?

Thanks!

Gosh, I wonder who pays him more for an install? Think

It doesn't say you don't need a phone line, it implies that it works without one though. This is in fact the truth. I mentioned previously what benefits were not available.

In order to enjoy the full benefits of this service, your receiver must be continuously connected to a land-based phone line.

TiVo's software is almost universally considered better than that available on any other DVR. Some of the features TiVo has that others do not are the capability to automatically find and record programs based on combinations of genres, actors or directors, having TiVo make suggestions (and optionally recording them) based on your preferences as indicated by your viewing habits and specific thumbs up/down ratings combined with the viewing habits of others and the ability to schedule recordings directly from commercials for upcoming shows.

I am going to take select quotes from Dish Comparison to make my point, their overall opinion is that either is fine, but my original statement was that I would not recommend DISH DVR for someone who is interested in DirecTiVo.

Quote:
Comparing Digital Video Recorder Guides and Menus
When it comes to menu "coolness," the DIRECTV TiVo wins hands-down. It's fully-animated and SUPER-friendly. This is largely because it's been through years of TiVo-user testing and improvement. It has the famous TiVo "Now Playing" menu, show suggestions and a fantastic search function.

Comparing Digital Video Recorder Features
The DISH DVR Player is pretty simple to use when it comes to recording a show. If you know how to set a VCR-by time, date and channel-you have all the knowledge you need. You can even set up weekly or daily recordings.
In contrast, the DIRECTV TiVo unit really rocks when it comes to recording. It's best feature is TiVo's Season Pass function. With it, you don't need to know time, date and channel. All you need to know is the show's name-and the DVR Player will catch every single episode, without repeats, if you want. It'll even catch shows when the times change.

Well,

I had replay TV before TIVO was around. I still think it was better than TIVO. We hate the suggestion feature. This is one of those love it or hate it things.

I really hated Directv's lack of serial support. Replay TV could have controlled the receiver by serial but the lack of serial protocols (Directv paranoia) led me to get the tivo / Directv combo.

So, soon we will know for sure! But this is right out of the Dish DVR manual

SETTING UP A DISH PASS
DISH Pass lets you create an automated DVR timer for a program title, actor’s name, or
keyword. After you set up a DISH Pass, the receiver will continually search based on your
request.
1 Press Menu-7 to open the Daily Schedule. You can press the DVR button twice to open
the Daily Schedule, as well.
2 Select DISH Pass.
3 Select the Search Method:
• Title - Search for programs by title.
• Info - Search for programs whose descriptions and titles contain key words.
• Exact - Select this option if you know the exact title of the program.
4 Enter your search criteria. You can use the keyboard shown on the screen or you can use
the Number pad on the remote control.
5 Select Create Timer. When the receiver has completed your search, the Timer Schedule
will display the results.
6 Select Set Priority if you would like to change the priority of your DISH Pass.
7 Select Options if you’d like to change any of the following:
• Protect Event - Prevents your programs from being erased.
• Set Channel - Select a specific channel.
• Start Early.
• End Late.

Sounds like it can do a lot of the same things TIVO or Replay can do.

Cheers!

Well,

That was fairly painless. Now have DISH DVR625. 2 remotes, 1 IR 1 UHF, feeds 2 TV's Has many of the features of TIVO. Dials out flawlessly on Vonage, EVEN has on screen caller ID. SO, I will stop wondering how to get TIVO/Directv to dial on Vonage.

Nice to have Sirius sat radio and more channels for less.....

I have almost 1000 days without a call on my series 1 DirecTivo. It works fine.
