PostPosted: Tue Aug 30, 2005 8:50 am    Post subject: Blocked Ports? Reply with quote Back to top

We've just moved our office from home to one of those "Executive Suites", where we have one office. The company we rent from has the entire floor, and they provide all of the shared services, including T-1.

Vonage worked just fine at home, but when I took it to the office, no go. (Other internet functions worked fine, even when routed through the MTA box). I called Vonage tech support, and found that my MTA was properly interrogating the Vonage servers, but the technician thinks that the Voip ports are blocked. I think this is probably on purpose, because the company we rent from would probably rather we use their phone service (with a significant mark-up).

My question: is there any work-around that I can use to get Vonage working again? Will a softphone work, or does that use the same ports?

Thanks,

Steve

If Vonage support couldn't help, one thing that comes to mind is setting up some sort of a VPN connetion (like OpenVPN) to your home office and having the Vonage ATA use that.

Thanks. But:

1) the Vonage help guy was Level 1. He was definitely reading answers from a manual to me.

2) what about softphone? does it use the same ports?

3) I have no idea how to use VPN. Can you recommend a place to get enough instruction that I can get up & running? And what will it be like if the new office is T-1, but the home office is Cable? Oh, and will this work at all if the home office has a dynamically served IP address? (It does.)

Thanks again.

Talk to your building's IT staff. The ports are probably blocked by default and not for some nefarious reason. There are many reasons besides saving on phone bills to use Voip especially in an executive suite.

For example some companies use Voip to allow remote workers to have an extension directly on the companies phone system. This provides for easy/free internal calling, simplified transfers for receptionists or automatic company directory.

Yes, SoftPhone will typically require the same ports.

Make sure you give the IT guys the firewall configuration when you ask for the change.

Phone Adapters Internet ports:

* SIP ports 5060 through 5061 using UDP protocol
* NTP port 123 using UDP protocol
* TFTP port 69 using UDP protocol
* DNS port 53 using UDP protocol
* RTP ports 10,000 through 20,000 using UDP protocol

The VPN solution should work. It is likely that your IP address at home doesn't change all that much but you should be able to use a Dynamic DNS service to connect to home. The easiest solution involves purchasing matching hardware for both ends. In my opinion this option should be a last resort.

Have you considered discussing this with the company that you rent from? If this was not explained to you or is not detailed on the lease, you just might have some leverage in resolving this matter in your favor.
