Every time I test my computer at testyourvoip.com I seem to have high packet discards but little or no packet loss. I do experience choppy calls or sometimes sounds like I am in a tin can, but not all the time. I do have a person I call often that says the quality is not that good and is choppy.

I can't seem to find what packet discards are or how to fix them. All I found on the test site explained packet loss which I'm not experiencing. I do have any where from 25-40% packet discards almost all the time.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks.

Quote:
To correct the effects of jitter, Voip endpoints collect packets in a buffer and put them back together in the proper timing and order before the receiver hears them. This works, but it's a balancing act. Processing that buffer adds delay to the call, so the bigger the buffer, the longer the delay. Remember the effects of latency? Keep in mind, no matter how big the buffer is, it is finite in size. If voice packets arrive when the buffer is full then packets are dropped and the receiver will never hear them. These are called discarded packets.

First, when looking at the packet discard, the percentage under degradation sources is not of primary importance. You are only showing 1% overall packet discards. This is not enough to be causing your voice quality issues. In fact your test your Voip scores are better than average.

So, what kind of phone have you got connected to your Vonage adapter? Have you tried calls hooking a corded analog phone directly to the adapter?

Of course Adelphia Tech support took numerous "snapshots" and said there end was working perfectly. My calls typically have the person on the other end incapable of hearing me for bursts of 10 seconds or more. I have used both wirless and corded phones on two different Vonage numbers with the same problem.

Thanks in advance

You will need to run pingplotter to attempt to determine where your packets are being lost. Search the forums for pingplotter or "ping plotter" for instructions.

I have run Pingplotter for the last 7 hours. I'm not sure how to upload the results. Suffice to say that it's a bloody red mess. i don't know how to upoad the values but the average PL% is well above 50%. All hops have problems.

Thanks again for the help.

Your problem appears to be with your cable modem or cable connection.

Hopefully reebok will chime in, otherwise I am going to have to go look up acceptable values again.

Is there a lot going on on your network (file transfers, gaming, multiple computers)?

Do you have the cable modem on the first split of the coax as it enters the home?
