PostPosted: Sun Aug 28, 2005 10:09 pm    Post subject: Need cordless phone recommendation Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all,

Here's my setup which creates my dilemna. My cable is coming in on the second floor of my house and is plugged into Vonage and a wireless network. My previous phone configuration had a cordless answering system mounted in the kitchen that accepts two cordless phones.

I am in hopes of finding an cordless/answering system that has a feature that will notify of a waiting voice mail by some type of indicator on the phone handset. Years back I had a cordless system that offered this feature that would indicate of a waiting voice mail on the answering machine and I could play it back from the handset.

Do any of you have any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks.

Ed

Since you have a wireless network I would not recommend a 2.4GHz cordless phone as it might cause interference with your wireless that's also 2.4GHz.

I would recommend you spend some extra money and get a 5.8GHz cordless. I personally have had for several years the Uniden Tru88xx system with 3 cordless handsets and 1 base with digital answering machine alas I do not use the answering machine and have been relying on Vonage VM (and have not had VM issues like others have reported.) My wireless router and Uniden base sit on the same desk (about 1 ft apart) and no problems with the handsets on another floor or my wireless router or card in my laptop (I can be on my cordless right by my laptop card and no issues whatsoever.)

Do you have a RTP300? If so be careful with the panasonic phone. They have an echo for the person you call. I know Vonage is working on or already has a "fix" that most likely will address this issue but they have not released the new firmware. I have the uniden 760 it has a light on the antenea that tell you when you have a vioce message and can have expansions up to 8 sets.

I found a Panasonic open box deal at Best Buy. It supports 4 phones, supports receiving the voicemail signals, and even has an option that reads the caller ID. The pronunciation is great. I could only hope you could find one of the open boxes, but I would have paid full price. I bought a second phone for the system and it's charger base came with a built in alarm clock / radio. The base station is a Panasonic KX-TG5230M and the remote charger base is a KX-TGA523M. 5.8 GHz.

I purchased the Uniden Powermax 5.8GHZ 2 Line System (one line is available in another model). This phone works great, I even got complimented by a Vonage tech on how good the phone sounded. Also, it is very loud, I had my hard of hearing father over and he told me that this is one of the only phones he can hear well on. Its 5.8 GHZ, up to 10 phones on the system, 2 lines, voicemail notification, speaker phone and caller ID on the base, time, etc. However, it does not have its own answering machine as it is meant to work with modern phone system with voicemail notification.

Add a vote for the Uniden TRU8xxx series of phones. I have them & love them. Also have a few friends who have bought pairs of them after playing with mine.

I'd avoid the Panasonic phones with the RTP300 for now, at least until later firmware comes out for it. While I've not experienced the echo problem others have reported, there's enough reports to say that it does exist on some (if not all?) of the RTP300 adapters when used with Panasonic 5.8Ghz phones. My Panasonic 900Mhz phone works fine with the RTP300.
