I really need help in setting up my network with Vonage. I have the WRT54G and the RT31P2 routers. I would like to have the WRT54G connected to the internet, and then connect the RT31P2 connected to that. I have tried to mess with the QoS in the WRT54G, but whenever I have it setup like that, there is a HUGE delay of about 2 or 3 seconds. The only way that I can get the delay to stop is if I connect the RT31P2 (Vonage box) to the internet. When I do that--the calls sound great...but, I don't want to do that...I want the wireless router closest to the internet.
I have gone on the Vonage web site and adjusted the bandwidth saver, I had it set at 90 kbps and just recently changed it to 50 kbps--no difference. I went into the Vonage box and changed the Voice QoS setting to the same setting that I put on the Vonage web site (50 kbps). Still nothing.
When I had the Wireless router closest to the internet, I tried to adjust the QoS settings on that...still had the delay. I changed the Port priority, Device Priority, and the Wired QoS settings...made no difference.
I'm confused because I hear so many say that the wrt54g is great to have with a network that includes Vonage...I need help in getting mine to work without making it sound like I am talking to someone in Bagdhad (with the delay).
Here are my details:
My location is Detroit area
ISP is Wow Cable
This is my first time posting on this forum..hopefully I am posting enought details from testyourvoip.com:
This is from me TO Boston: (keep in mind that this is with the setup that I do NOT want, with the Vonage box closest to the internet...

I have the same setup. Just installed it! I have the RT21P2 hooked to my cable modem and then the WRT54G hooked to that. Not sure why you want the wireless router closest to the Internet connection. It makes no difference. What I did was a hard reset on my WRT54G and had to make no changes from there. All was plug and play.Good luck |

I've heard that if the WRT54G is on the outside and the firmware upgrade is done...calls are great. It seems like the Wireless router has more functionality from a firewall standpoint...I just thought it would be better to be on the outside...plus, I wanted to try that Sveasoft firmware upgrade and try to play with the QoS, VPN and other stuff that it offers. Sounds pretty cool... |

Thank you AspectTec for the response. The guide is great.
What I wanted to do was to first get the network running with the wireless router closest to the internet, AND THEN upgrade the firmware...is that possible? Will the quality of the phone calls be good with the wireless router setup there WITHOUT running the sveasoft firmware, or do I HAVE to upgrade it for it to be a good gateway and handle the QoS well?
BTW, I see that there are free versions of the Sveasoft firmware...do you know anything about them, do you recommend them? |

I believe that the standard Linksys firmware for the WRT54G units provides QoS functionality, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to experiment with that configuration first.
There are a few people here using Sveasoft firmware (vonage-forum.com/searchforums.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" class="postlink">search the forums for more info). I use the free public Sveasoft Alchemy firmware, but the current subscription-only version is Talisman. Newer hardware revisions of the WRT54G/GS cannot run Alchemy though... |
