Hi everyone. Glad to find this forum. My problem is this.

Ive got cable internet access and a wireless connection. I USED to have my connection hook up in the following order. Cable modem, wireless router (Netgear), then Vonage Linksys RT31P2. This was my setup the last 7 months and it worked fine for the most part. I was able to use internet and phone, but seperately. If I would pick up the phone line, it would drop my connection to the internet. I talked this over with a friend who is proficient with various networks and he said I need to switch my routers around and I should get much better connection to the internet and be able to use both Vonage and the wifi connection simultaneuously.

Last night I reconfigured my setup. Now Ive got my connection hooked up in this order: Cable modem, then Vonage, then Netgear wi-fi router. The connection to the internet is faster. The clarity of my voange connection is crystal clear (before it was so so). But, the problem still remains I cannot use them at the same time.

Any ideas, fixes, remedies? Any help please would be greatly appreciated!

Tonite, Im going to try connecting everything up minus the wi-fi router to see if my internet connection still drops when i use the phone line. This might narrow things down a bit.

My friend has a similar setup although Vonage sent him a Motorola phone router and he doesnt have any problems.

Let me guess....you use a cordless phone... I'll take a second guess, it's a 2.4Ghz phone?

what sort of upload speed do you have? If you speed is too low that will cause you to loose net connection because Vonage requires somewhere around 120kbps when in use.

WiFi happens to run on 2.4Ghz as well...So, turning on the 2.4Ghz cordless phone could very well obliterate the wireless signal, especially if the cordless phone is an older 2.4Ghz (analog especially) and if the base or the handset are used close to the Netgear. I'm not sure if it was an isolated incident, but I've had Netgear routers' radio transmitters slowly degrade & lose strength until they became unusable.

If you can, try using a hardwired phone to the Vonage adapter and see if it still causes the Wifi access to cut out. My guess is that your problem will go away. If this is the case, look into getting a 5.8Ghz cordless phone. The Uniden TRU-8xxx phones are well-liked in the forum. I have a set myself and am quite happy with them.

It appears you have sufficient upload speed. Try putting your wireless router after the adapter. I've used this setup since day one and have not experienced any problems with this config except for a hiccup now and then. modem>>>>phone adapter>>>>wireless router.

I have this setup and it has been working like a champ (with very minor issues):

Roadrunner cable 5M/384K (in the 90% QoS) -> RT31P2 (no PCs hooked up to RT, just phone) -> Netgear WGT624 108Mbps -> PCs via ether cables and laptops via wireless/108Mbps PCMCIA cards with WPA enabled.

I can use both the internet and Vonage on all PCs at the same time, even with MSN Messenger video conference and Vonage at the same time. No major issue to speak of so far.

I do have RT31P2 with "E" serial number (reported to eliminate noise but not confirmed?) and mostly defaults on RTP with exception of password, time zone, and PPPOE disabled. Had 1.28 FW and worked well; upgraded to 1.29FW and so far so good.

I also have a cordless setup... yep, the Uniden Tru8885 5.8GHz with 3 handsets on 2 floors. The base is on 2nd floor on same desk as my wireless and other networking equipment. No problems.

Hope this helps (albeit no PCs in my case off RT31P2). Keep RT31P2 in front to benefit from its QOS. FYI, I also have Windows XP QOS on my PCs enabled (have not disabled to see if it makes any difference in network traffic)

P.S.: I buy my gear from Costco. If it doesn't work in my environment even after I add and upgrade things or if it just breaks I take it back with no questions asked. That is their policy.
