My friend had Vonage last year and no longer uses it. She is going to give me her old adapter. Vonage told me that it was good for nothing other than a paperweight, and that I could not use it as a router. (I couldn't believe they actually said the word paperweight! LOL!) Anyway, I don't believe they are correct. Although I could not use it for Voip, I should be able to use it as a router, right?

Thanks,
Mike

Well I don't have it yet. I have to go pick it up from my friend's house in Dallas and I haven't made it over there yet. I know that my Vonage uses the RPT300, but hers was purchased last year I think, so I doubt hers is the RPT300. I think hers is the older, blue Linksys version.

Vonage didn't even ask which version it was, and they were assuming it was the RPT300. They just said flat out several times that it would not work even as a router. I just don't see how that can be true. I mean the RPT300 has that capability doesn't it? Let's just say hers is an RPT300 that she's giving me. The RPT is a router as well as an adapter right? Or is it simply a switch?

Thanks,
Mike

Most likely it is a linksys rt31P2 she has...
And yes, it should work as a plain router also...

If it is the RT31P2 they can work like normal linksys routers.

Thanks so much. I was just going to throw it away after hearing from Vonage that it was simply a paperweight and wouldn't work as a router. I'll be sure to keep it as a backup router now. Thank you for the clarification. I figured the Vonage reps were incorrect.

I'm not sure how. They reiterated several times that this was an impossibility:

Dear Mr. Glover,

Thank You for contacting customer care. In response to your email, this device can not be used as a router. I do understand how this can be upsetting to you not to get any type of usage out of this router (highlighted by me to show that perhaps the rep doesn't understand my request.) other than a paper weight.

We look forward to having you as a valued customer.

Sincerely,
L.Young
Customer Care Representative
