Post subject: Traveling With My MTA
I'm wondering if anybody takes their MTA with them on the road. Specifically, the in-laws have a cable modem and a client site that I spend a lot of time at has T1 (assuming I can get the Network *beep* to open the ports).
How about if you move? Couldn't you take your MTA with you to the new location (across town or on another continent) and use it to retain your old phone number?

Post subject: Why yes, indeed
The short answer to your question is a simple YES.
You should be able to take the ATA box most anywhere and simply plug it in. Note IT may not work where there are a firewalls in place the prevent certain PORTS from communicating.
Vonage's ATA box works by immediately upon powering up and launching a query (on it's own) to
Vonage
SIP Proxy. This outbound query forces most routers to OPEN a port that allows for proper inbound/outbound communications. The ATA sends a mesage about every 15 minutes or so to the SIP Proxy around the clock, thereby keeping the 'port' open at all times.
Thus when you RECEIVE a call, the SIP proxy has a way to locate and communicate with your ATA to RING the telephone.
The
Vonage
service is not IP address dependent thus you are free to connect it virtually anywhere where it can reach it's mother (the proxy server) and establish a connection.
Don't you just love IP?

If one could get a satellite Internet connection that was fast enough, one could answer local calls anywhere there was power.
