I am new to V_nage and I am wanting to connect it to my existing equipment. I have an RTP300. My house is new and I have cat5e running to each room, and it can run a pc, or a phone. The patch panel for my network is upstairs and contains the wiring coming into the house for the phone, and fiber optic internet. I have all routers upstairs in that patch panel.

I looked on the back of the RPT300 and the phone adapter connection is an RJ11. If I were to connect my "phone line" to that, it would actually be in the form of a Cat5e, which is an RJ45. Is there such thing as an RJ45 to RJ11 conversion adapter?

How would I go about connecting this V_nage RPT300 to all of my existing phone outlets. They are all Cat5e and they all originate at that patch panel upstairs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

First, i do not believe you can run phone and ethernet on the same (cat 5) cable.

Once the 2 "circuits" (one for ethernet, one for phone) are identified, a simple phone cable should do the trick. This simple cable is a RJ11-RJ11 from the local hardware store. One end plugs into the phone adapter, the other into your RJ45 in the wall (yes, it will connect properly even though it is a smaller plug). All the "phone-dedicated" RJ45 in your house should be live and "phone" ready.

If you are running 2 lines, things are a little more complicated. You would have 2 wires from the phone adapter "merging" into the Cat5 cable.

Yes, each room has a Cat5e port. There is only one point in the room and it will run internet or phone. I've been in the house for 3 years, and each room is this way. It depends on which one you plug in. As my networking friend explained to me, the phone runs on different wires within the Cat5e, than the Internet does. Anyway, whether or not that is the case, they could not be used at the same time in one of my rooms via this port, since there is only one port to connect to in each room. i.e. it's either phone or internet for each room, which is ok since I mainly use wireless internet anyway.

I will definitely check out that RJ11 phone cable. You're right that I should be able to input that into the distribution panel after disconnecting the phone company's line from the box outside. That should work, and if it does it's much easier than I had imagined. Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go.

This is actually possible. Cat 5 has 4 pair, ethernet requires 2 and phone requires 1. I have two separate runs in my house where I have combined Ethernet and phone in a single CAT5 without problems.

If I can find the link I referenced to do my wiring I will add it to this post.

Check out this link. It has a vast amount of information and more than what you will need but it does include what you are looking for.

http://michigantelephone.mi.org/distribute.html

Also I would be interested in hearing how you did it since I think I have the same set up at home and I will be doing this as soon as my number is ported. I think All I have to do is disconnect the line from the phone company outside and plug it into one of the ports in the network distribution box. Let me know.

You can run your phone on CAT 5 Cable. The blue & blue/white where actually designed to carry the audio. You can even just use the same jack and different connectors.
