Ick... I hate Mitel equipment... Never worked with their Smart1 though, but I did find this manual for one online: http://www.dialerbuddy.com/manuals/Smart1%20Manual.pdf

The short answer is "yes". The solution is something else however. If you can't activate the Smart-1 program mode on your computer, you're basically dead in the water. I use one presently which I was able to successfully reprogram on my PC via the "hyperterm" application which you most certainly already have installed on your computer.

You need to be able to connect the Smart-1 through its series port to your PC. This can be touchy to accomplish but once you do, things will move quickly for you thereafter.

There are a series of 800 series search tables that you must be able to view in order to know what to remove or reprogram. You simply can't do this employing a DTMF (tone) telephone as the manual would lead you to believe.

I'm not sure we can accomplish this via this venue but ask your questions and let's see how well it works.

Sounds like a plan. Good luck with the new one. I was working on one of the earlier Smart-1s (with the 25 pin connection) and no LED. For a while I thought I had a busted one too until I realized the electrical plug was just loose in the socket! I now have one of the last ones made in '96 with the DB9 port and a red LED to tell you when it's getting power. Sounds stupid but the absence of that LED could have had me tearing my hair out wondering why I couldn't get hyper terminal to work... If have questions once the replacement arrives drop a line here.

PS Additional thought. I'm using a serial to USB converter device and determined that I had to connect things in sequence. First inserting the device into my PC's USB port. Second connect the cable to it, and third connect the cable to the Smart-1. If I didn't do it in that sequence...no way was I going to get into the programming mode in hyper terminal. Go figure.

I have a Smart-1 on my Vonage setup. A DB25/DB9 cable hooked up to a PC is ESSENTIAL. You can use DTMF to program but its a nightmare. Especially cause you don't know what's already programmed!!! I use mine for the speed dial, pulse to DTMF conversion and blocking 411/555-1212. I really like it. Note the manual linked above is for the newer model so some defaults are slightly different.

I'm not using a serial port on my PC because it doesn't have one. Therefore the serial to USB converter was the only way to hook it up. If you can't make that work I suppose you could try obtaining a digit analyzer to read what's in your Smart-1 too. Bottom line...if you can't read what's already set in your Smart-1, you may as well toss it.
