Is it possible to get Vonage through my neighbor's wirless connection? (I use it with his permission - we split the bill) He told me I can't use Vonage b/c I need the actual ethernet cable to hook up to Vonage phone adapter, is this true? I heard about a wireless bridge? What exactly is a wireless bridge? How does it work? Would it work for this. Does it matter if his wireless network is password protected? (once again, I have the password.).

It can be done. When I'm on the road, I've used my laptop to act as a wireless bridge, using it's wireless NIC to receive the signal and then connecting the Vonage TA to the laptop's ethernet port. A wireless bridge would simplify this. Sometimes I do have to reduce my Vonage bandwidth to ensure consistent calls on the iffy wireless connections, but it still does work.

Try going to www.testyourvoip.com and post the results here and we can tell you whether you're getting enough bandwidth and how much of a delay the encryption is putting in the way.

Yup, it sure can be done. The only problem might be that you have no control over how your neighbor is using his connection, so your audio might get choppy while he's sending an email with a big attachment, or something like that.

It does, of course, depend on your signal strength. Otherwise, there's no reason you couldn't use a wireless bridge! It's definitely worth a try. I should work.

Good luck!

A Linksys WET11 or WET54G would constitute a wireless bridge. This particular bridge consists of two sides, a wireless and an ethernet. The wireless side of the bridge functions as a wireless client to your neighbors network just like your laptop or whatever wireless device you are using right now is a wireless client to your neighbors network. The ethernet side of the bridge gives you an RJ45 connector to use with a computer, a router, or a Vonage telephone interface. Essentially you can think of these devices as wireless to ethernet converters(WET). Encryption settings can be configured on the WET device so that you can connect to his secured network. There is some overhead involved with wireless encryption but probably will not affect your call quality depending on how good your wireless signal quality is. By connecting a wireless router to this bridge you can redistribute your neighbors Internet connection throughout your house wirelessly. Just make sure that your WAP is using a different channel then your neighbors. Also be aware that most high speed internet providers do not like their customers sharing their internet connections with their neighbors, however most do not have ways to permit it beyond the legalese of their EULA.
