PostPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2005 12:31 pm    Post subject: Call quality inconsistant with 256up-512Down with RT31P2 Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all,
I can’t seem to get the call quality right at all.
Here’s my setup:
Origo ADSL Modem ------Linksys RT31P2 ----------Netgear 8 Port Router.
Note: Only one port used in the Linksys router for the Netgear router.. all computers are connected to the Netgear router.

There are usually 5pc’s connected to the network at any one time and we’re all sharing a 256up-512Down connection.

When I make phone calls they are usually Choppy (sometimes I can hear perfectly but others can’t hear me).

Is there any changes I can make to give me better quality?
PS: My bandwidth saver is set to 50k.

Thanks loads all,

Shay (Derry, Ireland)

It appears you don't have enough bandwidth to support 5pc's along with Vonage. Try uping your upload speed.

Can I do anything in the Linksys Router to help this...eg QOS?

You can try going into your dashboard to the bandwidth saver and setting it on the lowest setting, but with 5 PC's all connected at oncee etc you need more...

You may try replacing your Netgear 8 port router with a switch connected to your Linksys. This would give QOS a better chance but you will probably still have issues. The inconsistency of it working or not working is probably dependant on the network activity of each of the computers while you are attempting a call.

set your router to 30 (through Vonage internet acct interface) and have a Vonage rep install a codec for you that uses less bandwidth. This will allow for smooter calls at the expense of audio quality. The other replies are correct - your bandwidth is being eaten up by the othr computers. You could just not use the internet while on a call too - that should help.

RT31P2 codec now - G.726
should be - G.729

I did this and it helped a lot.

shay,

I have my bandwidth saver on 50kbps and my upload speed is maxed at 384 kbps. When I run some tests while on the phone, my upload speed is usually reduced by 100kbps which means it's down to the 280s. If this is the case with yours, it will knock it down to 150s which means it could only allocate 30 kbps to each computer. That's not a whole lot of bandwidth which probably results in your voice connection taking the hit.

You can play with your qos setting in your router. I did that while calling my voicemail and ran the testyourvoip and found the best configuration to max out my upload speed. But with only 256 up and 5 pcs, no matter what you do, you'll struggle with quality unless they are all turned off while you are on the phone.
