Last week we upgraded our comcast cable modem and I wanted to connect the telephone adapters directly to the modem's router and disconnect it from our network router in hopes that the change would solve the problems we are experiencing with dropped calls and echoing. When I connect them to the cable modem router the telephone adapters do not work. When I reconnect the telephone adapters to the network router they work again. I thought that I might just have to reconfigure the telephone adapters to make the switch work. When I initially installed the Linksys phone adapter I was able to configure it by typing http://192.168.15.1 in the browser address field. That no longer works. Is there some way to make the switch to the cable modem work?

Unplug the cable modem, wait about 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait until all the lights on the modem are normal again. Your cable modem probably already assigned an IP address to your network router so it isn't giving another one out to your Vonage router. Resetting the modem will release that IP address. Some systems require you to wait much longer but I believe for Comcast, 30 seconds should be sufficient.

Check to make sure your phone is working.

On your PC, release and renew your IP address. If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, go to the command prompt (Start/Programs/Accessories) and type:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

If you are using an older version of Windows, go to Start/Run, type "winipcfg" and press Enter. You can select your network adapter here and then release and renew the IP address.

Verify that your new IP address is 192.168.15.XX (where XX is usually between 100 and 200). Then try http://192.168.15.1 again.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I am doing something wrong but it did not seem to work. The power light will come on when attached directly to the Comcast Modem Router but the two line lights do not and of course there is no dial tone. I don't know if it matters but I was also not able to access the adapter using http://192.168.15.1. Shouldn't the adapter automatically adjust?

MikeatBWC,

Knowing your location and cable modem make and model would help.

Could you post more details about your setup ( What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage.... )?

Sorry about the lack of detail. I am located in Fort Gratiot Michigan. The Comcast Cable Modem and Router is an SMC Networks device with the model number SMC 8013 WG.

The following is a description of the network as it exists and the way I am attempting to reconfigure it.

Currently, the Comcast Cable enters the building and connects to the Comcast Cable Modem and Router. The Comcast Cable Modem and Router is connected to the LAN router. Three telephone adapters are also connected to the LAN router as well as a switch that has twenty five or so networked machines.

I was told that the problems I am experiencing (dropped calls and echoing primarily) with the Vonage service may be corrected if I attach the three adapters directly to the Comcast Cable Modem and Router instead of having to go through the LAN router first and then out through the Comcast Cable Modem and Router.

Thanks, that helps...

What WAN and LAN ip addresses does your existing LAN router have when it is connected to the cable modem?

Also, is a PC able to connect to the internet if connected directly to one of the LAN ports of the SMC 8013WG?

The WAN ip address on the LAN router is 10.1.10.156 and the LAN ip is 192.68.1.1. The PC cannot connect to the internet when cabled directly to the SMC 8013 WG but it can when cabled to the LAN router.

OK, so everything behind the 8013WG is using private ip addresses (I was wondering if it was running as a transparent bridge).

To get to the next step, I would check:

  1. Is the 8013WG's DHCP server enabled?
  2. If enabled, what LAN ip address range does the 8013WG hand out?
  3. Is any MAC address binding/filtering in place on the 8013WG?
  4. How does the LAN router get its 10.1.10.156 WAN ip address (DHCP from 8013WG or static).
  5. Does DHCP give a pc connected directly to the 8013WG an ip address. If so, what is it?
