I now have DirecWay Satallite Internet, when using Vonage there is a delay that makes using Vonage impossible, is there anyone else that has this problem, or does any know how to fix it. I have a single phone going into myATA, which is a Cisco.

Using a satellite connection for the internet introduces a high latency that cannot be avoided (its inherent in the technology/physical distance) - that type of latency is a Voip killer - I dont think you'll ever get satisfactory results using sat ISP with Voip.

According to Vonage Customer Service, they have customers that Use Vonage Service through a Satallite ISP. However Vonage Customer Service stated they do not provide any type of support for this. (after 5 days waiting on an answer from them)

I'd certainly like to hear from those customers about the quality of the Voip calls over their sat connections. There are things you can do to optimize a sat connection (e.g. large window sizes for tcp connections) but the latency introduced by bouncing the packets off the sat is just a fact of life and nothing can get rid of that.

To the original poster - are you saying it just doesnt work or the delay in the call makes it basically unusable - I can't tell from your description.

I can hear and the distant end can hear me, however the latency makes normal phone calls impossible because of the delay. I emailed back to customer service that they provide some their "customers" that are using Sat. ISP with my email address so they can contact me and I can find what they did or did not do in order for their Vonage service to work over Sat.

I bet any customers that are using it are using it as some sort of backup or emergency connection - not as a primary telephone for normal use. It sounds like it basically acts like a traditional sat phone that you see on tv. Very hard to have a regular conversation with those long delays.

Could you use it like a walkie talkie and say "Over" when each party was finished talking?

It would be interesting to see if Vonage would work on cruise ships that have internet access in staterooms (realizing the quality wouldn't be good- but would be cheaper than the $8/minute most cruise ships charge.

what if you used a higher speed package like the business package which offers 1 meg download and 100k download speeds. Would you still have a latency problem?

Sat latency alone shouldn't make the service unusable. In the early 80's I had a satellite based LD service on my phone. The latency was noticeable, but didn't render the service unusable. There was maybe .5 delay.

Issues may involve techniques used to reduce transmissions between satellite & ground such as collecting data from requested web pages then sending assembled page to user in a single transmission.

Maybe some one knows more about how Directway handles the Voip data.
