I am in the process of moving to the Atlanta area and called Bell South to set up my service. Besides the exorbitant charges to get two lines into my apartment, the attitude of the customer service representative induced an involuntary motion in my arm that caused me to hang up the phone on her!

Then, I started searching the web for alternatives and came upon Vonage's website. I called the number for information and got an earful about 911 from the rather pleasant and informative customer service representative.

What I am hoping to get from you all is your experience using Vonage; basically the good, the bad and the ugly. I like to get into this with my eyes wide open. What is important to me are, ease of use, clarity and reliability. I spend a significant part of my days on the phone (for work, I dislike them for personal use) and do most of my work as such. I would like something reliable and I don't want people on the other side complaining about the noise they hear other than my own. I also would like something that doesn't require any programming language other than plain and simple English, or Spanish or French.

Can ya help? Much appreciated!

I was like you, i needed a good phone service for less cash. I saw the Vonage commercial on TV, and did some research about it on the internet.

I called my local radio shack and they ordered the adapter for me. A week later i went to radio shack to pick it up. THe rep there set up my account and everything for me at the store. All i had to do when i got home was plug it in.

I cant tell a differnce in quality. The only difference is the price.

Plus, Vonage has lots of great features at no extra cost. I would have had to pay almost $10 extra a month just for caller ID and call waitng with my older proivder.

However, their is ONE draw back. Instead of ordering my Vonage adapter, i bought mine from radio shack. (as already stated). Now, 7 months later i still have no rebate. I talked to a customer service rep who said they would send me a check the next day. THe next day i checked on my rebate status at and my rebate status had gone BACKWARDS! (which reminds me i need to call them again)

So, the only draw back i can see is their rebate functions.

I've only had Vonage for one month now (but put quite a few minutes on, close to the 2000 minute mark now), but so far I love it. Keep in mind that I went through two RT31P2 routers before they shipped me the RTP300 router, which has much better voice quality. It's worked out well for me, but apparently some other people are having issues with it. They just sent out a new firmware update last night, so we'll see over the next couple weeks if it makes the difference.

Quality of the phone calls has been superior to that of my Verizon land line. Less background noise, fuller range to the sound quality (more bass, more treble).

Reliability has been good (can't rate it excellent because of the outages they had earlier in July, which were better than what happens around here when contractors hit a Verizon fiber optic line which does happen frequently). None of the Voange outages left me totally in the dark, just had difficulty reaching some area codes.

Vonage customer service is alright... don't expect them to respond to e-mails (piss poor in my book), but if you call them on the phone, prepare to wait, but usually once you get a live human, they will try to do their best to make things happen. I guess I'm spoiled, as I have premium accounts with Verizon and have my own rep who handles everything. Of course, if it's after hours, I'm stuck with the cattle class & fighting Verizon's non-functional automated attendant. That said, if you get ahold of one of the Tier 2 Vonage techs later at night (or very early morning), they're very laid back and will tell you all of the things the daytime guys won't. I've learned quite a few interesting things about their network and how things work because of this.

The feature set is excellent. Call Transfer and 3-way calling have been lifesavers over the past month. More interestingly, unlike my own PBX, when I transfer a call on Vonage, it frees up my line to use. I didn't think I'd use Click-2-call, but with the Outlook integration, it's quite useful. Busy number redial's rather nice, and it's nice to not have to pay for it per use, like Verizon charges. Also nice is the realtime Activity log. I was away from home & needed a number that I called a few days back. Just signed onto the Vonage webpage, flipped through the activity log & found the number.

Tomorrow marks the 1 month mark for me, and overall, I'm VERY pleased. The call quality is superior, and the feature set is very good. Out of ~400 placed calls, I think I've had maybe 1-2 that were sub-par, but this was during the Vonage outages, so some connection, even if poor quality, is still better than no connection whatsoever.
