PostPosted: Sun Aug 21, 2005 12:23 pm    Post subject: Echo Problem - Phone? Reply with quote Back to top

I am a new Vonage user. Not too happy though. People that I talk to complain of an echo in their voice, while I do not hear anything in either voice.

A little background on my setup, I am using the RTP300 Linksys router alone, between my computer and the toshiba PCX2500 cablemodem (Roadrunner ISP). 1 line only, no faxes, no TiVo, nothing else connected. Internet connection has always been quite stable. current test shows communication speed is 4.1 megabits/sec.

I called Vonage customer service and they transferred me to a tech who installed a new firmware and made some other tweaks but it did not help.

I was using a Panasonic TG2431 cordless phone (brand new) and the other people I called were using older Panasonic cordless phones, old fashioned cord phones, and even a cellphone. Then I had an idea, I plugged in an old phone that i have (a Lucent cordless) and with this phone the other people say that the echo is significantly reduced or eliminated whereas with the TG2431 phone each word was echo'ed. i did try turning the volume down on that phone but it did not help. If you are not familiar with this Panasonic phone it is a 2.4ghz Digital.

Does the type of phone you use have an effect on echo? What type of phone is best to use with Vonage? All I need is a single line, no expansion phone unit w/answering machine and callerID ability. Since I just bought this phone I can return it....so I need some advice on another one to get. This phone says "digital" so should I get an analog phone....perhaps there is a issue with delay between an analog signal and digital phone?

Try the following:

Unplug the RTP300 from power & unplug all of the computers & phones attached to it. Plug the RTP300 back in (so you'll only have the data cable from the cable modem & power cables attached) and let it sit there for 10 minutes by itself. Vonage is sending out a firmware update as of last night at 8pm ET. The above procedure should speed up the process & time it takes for you to receive it. After that, reconnect the phones & computers and check which version of firmware you're running by going to http://192.168.15.1/ In the upper right corner it should tell you the firmware version. 1.00.43 is the lastest and has fixed many problems. I'm not sure if it addresses the echo issue, as I've never had it happen on mine, but they've changed quite a few things.

I know some of the Toshiba cable modems have been problematic, but not sure if your particular modem is one of them. Maybe one of the other forum regulars can comment upon this.

At any rate, let us know how you make out.

Just checked the firmware, it is indeed 1.00.43. That must have been done yesterday by the Tech Support.

As nice as some of the new Panasonics are, changing phones is indeed your answer. I had the same issue, plus an annoying delay when people spoke, but all that went away when I got rid of my Panasonic and switched to a Uniden 8865. Great phone, the delay and echo are gone.

Well.....no luck. Returned the Panasonic, bought a VTEC and the problem actually seemed to be a little worse! Now I can hear an echo of myself!

so another call to tech support and he told me to change from phone port 1 to port 2. I didn't hear anything when i was on the phone with him (figures....it never happens when you WANT it to!) and it seemed to be ok after switching but I wont know more till later tonight.

I think Bruce2005's solution of switching the lines is the workaround, it fixed the echo on my RTP300:

Update: well the V-Tec phone was better and now I have very little if any echo at all. But I wasn't thrilled with the style of that phone so I returned it for an AT&T. ugh, with a full charge on that battery I could hear some background hiss which went away when i swapped to another phone. So I decided again to return that one and try once again the panasonic, because I like their looks and features. I made a call as soon as i took it out of the box with the battery nearly empty and did not hear the echo like on the panasonic at first. So, I think it may have indeed been the port. Its charging right now so I'll see by tommorrow when the battery is at its strongest.

Cool... Has anyone else solved their RTP300 echo problem by switching to line 2?

I should probably call Vonage at some point this week and give it a try...

If the new firmware doesn't come on Friday then I'll probably try line 2.
