Here is my orginal issue...
http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic7758.html

Now I learned the replacement will not be here until Monday, and I really need to get some work done today, preferably not all on my cellphone burning up minutes..

Question is-If the device is being shipped with the old routers number etc on there, can I go to Best Buy etc, pick up maybe a Pap2 etc to use with a separate router I have, and at least have Vonage service through today and the weekend until the replacement from Vonage arrives on Monday? Or am I pretty much SOL and have to use the cell all weekend, and face the wife? Very Happy

Technically yes.

You are going to have to get the MAC address changed on your account each time you switch ATAs. Typically you call customer service to get this done. There have been some reports of being able to do this through the retail activation link from the website. Search the forum.

Logistically you are going to run into issues.

The retail units are being sold as incentives to activate new service. I am unsure if this is required for the list price (like TiVo units) or just for the rebate. Either way you may end up paying more for the unit than it is typically sold for.

Then you get into the dilemma of returning the unit when your replacement arrives. Morally it is either fraud or theft to buy a product with the intention of returning it later (I am too evil to know which it is). Some retail outlets have established restocking fees to counter this behavior, so be aware of those if you intend to return it after the weekend.

That is what I was afraid off..the switching of the MAC id's isnt a real issue, just time I guess.

The moral issue to me is easily solved. Since technically I do contract recruiting for my company, I don't get paid if I am not continually working, and this interview today could net me some very decent cash..So paying a bit more or a restocking fee I guess is worth it in the long run...booo...

As much as I have been extremely happy with my service, I guess I may have to have another back up POTS line for these situations. That was the LAST thing I ever wanted, but time is money and if this takes too much time to resolve than I am out the money...

Thanks for the quick reply Stephen as always..

You have a cell phone so it seems a waste to get a backup POTS line.

What is needed is the ability to go into a retail store and get a replacement for your adapter if it fails.

However, if you are using your line for business I would recommend you price buying a second adapter to have as a spare versus paying for a POTS line you will never use.

Another alternative would be to make do with a headset and use a softphone temporarily.

If you are not worried about incoming calls you could also use a low priced PC->phone service temporarily.

Good ideas...I would not want the POTS, but it may be an option. Both Vonage lines are down since yeterday am, and with 95 minutes on tech support yesterday, 35 with cusmtomer service today, plus about 180 used for work just yesterday, they go fast. Now with the router not showing up until Monday, a conference call today using dual mins that will go about 90 mins between the two calls, and my wife sharing minutes you could see how they would add up fast. I have accumulated some good rollover minutes, but with my billing cycle just starting a few days ago, a large chunk of those will be gone....

A good suggestion for Vonage would be to have UPS as a backup shipping cpmpany that can deliver on Saturdays. DHL is great normally, but doesn't have Saturday deliveries. I am a bit miffed, but still love the service and will keep it defintely. Others as most have seen can be very fickle and this situation would make alot of people I think drop the service.

Stephen, again thanks for the ideas. Looks like it is time to get wife approval and hit Bestbuy!

I wonder what happened on your shipping deal... Vonage always overnighted the routers to me and they always arrived the next day here (exception being my first order, which arrived DHL-->USPS)

Me too, as this is my second time I have had to replace a router....I got the order confirmation and RA email 5 minutes after we hung up, but the DHL shipping arrived today. And I was looking forward to my new toy!

But, they credited me $54 to the account so I guess I will grin and bear it...

I had the same deal recently. The new adapter shipped as next day shipping, but since it was shipped on a Friday I didn't get it until Monday. My suggestion is a dual router setup with a number on each. Vonage service is so reasonably priced compared to POTS you can't go wrong and the odds of having both devices with problems at the same time is farily slim. Works great for me anyway.

I would have to agree...I looked into a basic POTS line and it would be around $38/month for basic stuff, so that is too much..I just wish I had caught them early enough in the day Friday once I realized DHL can do Saturday shipping as an option...Oh well.

I was also just thinking about something as I typed this. Before Vonage I would have thought $38 for basic service was acceptable. Now I guess I have become spoiled!
