Today I purchased a Netgear FVS114 Prosafe VPN router. My current setup is: Cable Modem > Router > Motorola Adapter. I have been using a Motorola WR850G router without any problems for almost a year. However, when I swap the router with the new Netgear I get 4 blinks on the phone adapter that last forever and never get a dial tone. I have rebooted everything in the correct order 3 times now. I am able to get internet just fine with either router. I have DHCP enabled and believe Vonage had me set up the VT1000 with a static IP when I first signed up. I have Charter 3mbps high speed cable connection that works perfectly. (Honestly, my Vonage has been almost perfect since day one) I'm just confused as to why it's not working with the new router. Should I perhaps trying resetting the phone adapter with the reset switch on the back of the unit? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! |

You should probaby not try to factory reset your adapter without talking to Vonage first, technically it is a violation of the terms of service.
If Vonage had you set up a static IP for your Motorola adapter, perhaps it is not in the same LAN address range that your new Netgear router is using.
So, if you can get access to the adapter's set up screen and give us the IP information and then do the same for both routers we could talk you reconfiguration.
Check page 19 of the user's guide for instructions on viewing the adapter's configuration. |

Hi,
I decided to take the Netgear VPN router back and purchased the Netgear RangeMax Wireless router instead. I was able to get in to the Motorola phone adapter and change the settings to obtain an IP address dynamically. The phone adapter now works. However, based on past experiences, I know I'll need to assign a static IP eventually. Every few days the phone adapter will stop working and I'll have to reboot it. The information I have from the Netgear RangeMax is below. I guess based on the information, I would need to know the correct paramenters I would need to set on the Motorola phone adapter so it has a static ip address that works with the Netgear router.
Internet Port:
MAC Address 00:0F:B5:A9:DB:11
IP Address 66.168.65.68
DHCP DHCPClient
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.248.0
Domain Name Server
24.196.64.53
68.115.71.53
LAN Port:
MAC Address 00:0F:B5:A9:DB:10
IP Address 192.168.1.1
DHCP ON
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
I also ran an ipconfig with the command prompt:
IP address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1
Please let me know if any additional info would be helpful. Thanks!

The Motorola's used to lock up like that but I haven't been having those problems for almost a year. I use a dynamic IP for mine. Typically it occurred when the adapter was outside the router.
What static IP you assign is based on your router configuration.
It needs to be 192.168.1.x but the 'x' can not be in the range of DHCP ports that the Netgear DHCP server hands out. Look for a DHCP configuration screen and see if you can determine the range.
If you have a problem with the adapter locking up post back and we can work through it.
EDIT: Corrected IP Address |

Thank you. I will try the adapter for a while without a static IP address and see how it works. FYI...The range I found in the router config is as follows:
Starting: 192.168.1.2
Ending: 192.168.1.154 |

Any IP between 192.168.1.155 and 192.168.1.254 should be fine. |
