PostPosted: Thu Aug 18, 2005 3:00 pm    Post subject: Different codec for RT31P2 router needed for reduced band Reply with quote Back to top

I have unreliable cable ISP. I'm always connected, but at times the upstream bandwidth is very limited, to the tune of 100 kbps, 50 kbps, 20 kbps, down to less than 10 kbps for breif periods of time!
This means that sometimes calls are interupted or get very choppy, with significant packet loss. This is not Vonages fault, and I'm trying to get my ISP to replace my modem, as this may be part of my problem...
Anyways, I changed all of the settings on my router to the minimum bandwidth use, and this still was not good enough. I kept digging, and found out that the router can use different 'codecs' (firmware for the router), that change how much bandwidth is needed for my Voip to work. I changed the codec from G.726 to G.729 and it seems to have made a big difference. At times it still goes bad, and I do bandwith tests - they show that it may be my connection, my modem, or both.

Go to http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.html?page=Bandwidth+consumption
for a comparison chart, and check which are compatible with your router here:
http://compare.ozvoip.com/codecsupport.php

...if you have limited bandwidth and need to reduce size/amount of info traveling through.

Hope this info may help others!
Cameron

Well, a few things... 1) codecs aren't firmware. They're different mathematical equations used to compress (CODe) and decompress (DEC) audio. 2) Vonage already offers this feature, just go to the Features section of your web account and choose Bandwidth Saver. Using the lowest bandwidth option, I was able to place calls on a dial-up connection. Not the best of quality, but it got the job done.

Thanks for the reply VonageTPA.

I sloppily reffered to codecs as firmware for the router, while all I was trying to convey was that the codecs exist in the router, as does the firmware.

Also, while Vonage does offer this option, setting it to the lowest setting alone was not enough for me. I further had to have a Vonage operator assist me in installing a codec that used less bandwidth. The operator simply sent it to my router, and I unplugged it and plugged it back in. This has helped me a great deal - more than just lowering my account settings alone.

Also, I recently reset my MTU and Phone QoS settings. It seems I probably set them far too low (MTU was 1000, and QoS was 96 kbps). I raised the MTU to a reasonable 1448 ( a # I found worked through ping tests), and disabled the phone QoS so it reset to the default. This may further solve some issies... we'll see.
